ricoh cannot read the data dvd disks it has burned! Help!!

Help!!! I have just bought a DVD Recorder (+R / +RW) and Packard Bell disks (+R). I want to back up my HDD onto these.

When I burn the DVD data disk (using nero v6 or InterVideo), the disk burns fine, but Windows (XP- SP1) complains about the disk not being formatted. On a Nero verification, the message that "the drive cannot be mounted" appears.
(I've tried both ISO and UDF)

Is the media (Packard Bell) just crap?

Help -=- this is driving me crazzzzzzzzzzy!
