Replacing a CDRW with New DWD Writer. Help!

:) Greatings all. Like most here I am new to this Forum, so I will try to keep it short and simple.

I am going to replace a CDRW in my Compaq P4 1.7 GHz. 512MB Ram and Windows XP (with all the patches) with a DVD +/-rw. I want to replace the CDRW because of no room elsewhere. Besides the DVD writer will be an upgrade for my CDRW.

Now My question. Can I simply remove the old drive and easily replace it with the DVD writer?

No need to do anything special- just check the jumper on the back of the drive to be seated properly. Atapi devices need no special drivers to run. Also check if your installed burning software supports the drive, and that's all.

Oh, just a notice: if you are installing a drive which has DVD-RAM support (say that Hitachi/Lucky Goldstar combo drive) then you DO need to install drivers. Else, you are ready to run right out of the box.

Or if you have Firewire and or USB2 on your system you may want to go external. These external Firewire/USB2 enclosures are very cheap to buy and house your Drive...
Using one on a dog beat win98 Pent3 450MHZ Desktop work's a treat also on a PentM 1.6GHZ notobook XP Pro (Pioneer 107 burner) fast or what. :D

You know, I thought about using a Firewire enclosure, but was not sure if a DVD Burner would work as well as if it was in an internal bay.

The "new" Firewire 800 (1394b) claims twice the bandwith of Firewire 400 Which is just a little slower than USB2. I don't really want to spend money on a Firewire card and the enclosure as well as the DVD Burner if the speed and quality of the burn wil not be as good as an internal.

Jumbo1 I understand your concern here bro I for one can say the external housing with my Pio drive is a lot fasters bro. And the 400 Firewire is faster then the USB2. I had my Pio in my desktop PC Pent3 450MHZ and it did the business in there. But when it came to ripping the DVD'S I was getting speeds of 8x tops. Place it it a friends PC Pent4 3GHZ just to see if my old P3 was not cutting it and getting the same results. Now the same DVD disc in the external housing ripping speed top bang on 12x Firewire and USB2 top speed 10x :D My main reason for using an external housing is I do a lot of work from my notebook and my main HDD is Firewire also I can leave my other drives in the desktop PC and still use my Pio in there. Still you have to see which suits you and your wallet at the end of the day.The external unit I'm using is ..well the Model No. is P550C made in Taiwan. I'm very over the moon with it and looking to get one more for my Liteon DVD ron drive....
Anyway you will be happy with an internal fitting bro. Let use know how you get on in your quest take care happy shopping. :)

Thanks for the advise. I am working mainly from a desktop PC in my Home office so I think I'll try replacing my CDRW. It will leave me with a DVDROM I can play with as far as region coding etc.

I am also looking into a video capture format for VCR to DVD conversion which I think will be Firewire.

like the masters answer you i can answer your question with a simple:
yes!

don't have any problem....remove the cdrw and plug the dvd writer in his place (or use the 2 drives,no problem)!
