just follow the instructions in the tutorials section by ChickenMan.
Sorry am not following your question, cause never had to select region free from ifo edit. What software are you using after ripping the DVD to HDD? What are you trying to do with the rip? (as in make DivX or VCD/SVCD, etc...)

but to answer about the region free:
you only need to select "Unlock drive", "DeMacrovision", "Copy IFO-File" from the movie settings tab & in the Files/Backup tab just select under options "Region Free (patch "Video_ts")", "Unlock drive", "DeMacrovision".
Everything else should be set right (but for reference check tutorials section again). It works perfectly with no other software needed for region free & demacrovisions.

De-region with Smartripper negates the option in ifoedit. Use one or the other.
