Recomendation for good av sw!!

I posted this allready on 2 forums and still no answers(which could solve the problem)!!!Shortly---What i need is a small regular av proggy--free or not--doesent matter!!!!!!!Most important thing is that proggy got to have one icon only in a tray and task manager--maximum 2 at most in a task........I did use fsecure--great av proggy--but those milliuons icons in a task manager starting to bugging me!!!!!!!!!!!So any suggestions are more then velcome and necessary since i downloading24/7 and runninjg without a av currently--thanks a lot.....So check how many icons your av have and leteme know!!!Thanks a lot...........

A.V.G. freeware version 6 ... dont use it myself but being here long enough i know people like and love it :)

get it here > http://www.grisoft.com/ :)

not with most software u can choose to have an icon in the task bar or to not have an icon :)

and personnally i dont use TASK manager as it itself hogs resources with it system resident in the background :) updating antivirus myself reminds me to do the occassional full system scan :) yes you can schedule this too but if you are in the middle of using the system it will scan regardless of you wanting it to or not :( so tends to get in the way :(

I would stick with F-Secure myself and enjoy the bulletproof protection you know it offers. ;)

Fsecure is the thng i know--it rocks BIG time--------Anyway i tried that fprotect---do not know how safe is still--but its so small--stable--my cpy is 97 only--with fsecure it was 120(with avast160:mad:   )and is really simple--so i started to test it--and of courrse if no good--back to fsecure and those trillion processes in a task manager!!!!!!!!!!

Zver,F-Prot engine is also embedded in F-Secure,so it seems that it ain't bad at all.....;)
Just wondering why you care that much about running processes in your task manager...
if you're protected against malicious scrips and your virusscanner is monitoring your system and your email client is protected too,it's perfectly normal that task manager shows multiple processes, caused by your virusscanner....
Check the total amount of ram that is used by your scanner and compare it with other virusscanners which have maybe only 1 tray icon or 1 running proces in task manager, you'll find out that F-Secure isn't the memory hog that you think it is...:)

no, but its a bugwhore o_O
Roady, u may not agree with me, but i didnt have the same luck as u.
Got BSOD 1 day,and on another day it slowed down my pc, esp when running in safe mode

F-Prot is a good AV, but I may suggest a few that are better, as far as I'm concerned:
- NOD32
- DR. Web (3.29b+)
- Avast! 4 (also a free version available, which is simply great).
- Innnoculate ET
- VET antivirus (clone of Innoculate).

Don't even bother about buggy and disfunctional stuff like Norton AV, Mcafee and such- actually they don't have to suck, but they find their way to their target with ease...

Never tried 1 of these,I guess everyone of them has it's pro's and con's.......I'm using Avast 4 since it's released....ATM,I have no plans to change it for another 1...:D

I checked the usage in a task manager-its not bad at all--and i like fsecure--ands never had any probs with it,and the proggy is simple great--never any probs(found lots of animals in kazaa downloaded stuff)--i guess number of processes ius just an excuse to look for one--guess just got tired of looking at same thing???????:) Thanks for all ideas guys!!

I use both F-Secure and Avast 4 on my 'puters (one on each ;)) and have yet to have had any problems.

In fact if I had not purchased a license for F-Secure, I would use Avast 4 exclusively. One of the best and it's free!

Actually I'm also using Avast! 4 (the pro version, which is not really different than the free/home one- the only things missing are the enhanced GUI and the script blocker). It is simply exhellent, especially the runtime guard is next to non-existing: it does not slow the system down even when opening huge (600+MB) compressed files. Even NOD32 which is supposed to be the best AV available currently does make a hiccup when such files are accessed.

Well, I'll stick my hand up for AVG.

Never had a problem with it. The updates are quite regular and they even have plugins for some mail servers.

In fact, mail server support was a key factor in me using it.

My mail server uses an API that grisoft provide and checks all incomming msgs in the background and deals with them appropriately.....I can't be bothered with appz that are 'in ya face' and I would have to agree with the '1 icon on the system tray' approach.

.....Minimalware

I cannot get f-prot to update using Updater .... even when I updated to 3.13 ... get Runtime errors and abnormal program termination.... and I reckon even with that problem its a nice simple fast scanning prog. so I now have to use it as a back up on demand scanner....
