Re-install W2K, YET keep files?

Hello again, everyone. I have a question. I have major video problems that are irreversible (I have installed and re-installed EVERY codec known to man, and nothing solves the problem of my videos either having a white screen with sound, or a black/white picture with sound, or a white "reflective" picture with sounf). I was wondering if I could just re-install my W2K? Would that erase the files that I currently have on it? Just wondering? Thank you again, everyone. I LIVE for this site. Good-bye.

u can reinstall with ur original cd and when the option comes to format or to relace the current windows folder choose the latter..... but be forewarned u could end up with a few extra "my documents" folders this way.....lol....least thats what happened to me...... or u could just use system commander 7 and install a second o/s on ur system then copy ur files from the old partition, then format.....that way u have a clean install.... system commander does all the partitioning for u too, so no need to worry about making partitions first

THANK YOU SO MUCH...

..., I will do the latter. However, maybe I just did not get it, but can you explain in a little more detail concerning the, "Excessive My Documents" folders? I understand that this only happened to you, but can I just erase all of excessive folders, or does something need to be done that is a little more professional? Thank you again. I REALLY appreciate it.

the "excessive" my documnets folders and documents and settings folders will appear because they r not part of the windows folder , but windows creates these folders on installation so if there is even one variable in the name of ur computer on install it will create new folders, the biggest problem with this is when u install new programs and choose to create desktop icons they will go to the old folders so needless to say they will not appear on ur current desktop..... yes the latter is a better idea tho because windows is always much more stable with a clean install

I'll second the final recommendation of 'cursin'-Johnny: a clean reinstall of Win2K is always a much more stable, long-term bet than a half-install, restoration, which will likely procreate even more bugs over time.

I'd uninstall as many programs as possible with the 'add-remove programs' option in control panel (or, if I'm feeling brave, just delete the Program Files folder), CAREFULLY backup documents and internet mail and then deltree the entire windows folder from a dos environment to get rid of the old registry entirely. Then I'd reinstall Windows from scratch, add the SP3 and DirectX, then Via or Intel chipset drivers, and last the video adapter drivers. Reinstall the programs and start picking up the pieces.

Good luck.

no need to do all that from dos.... once Windows is installed on the aprtition u can copy any needed files to the new version altho the old C partition will appear with a diffrent letter as system commander fools the new partition into thinking its the C drive.. this makes it easier to use default settings when installing programs...... once thats done u can format the old partition even from within windows and then use partition magic to delete the old partition and resize the new one and voila..... ur back to what u originally started with.... believe it or not the only part of this procedure that takes much time at all is installing windows... and system commander is very user friendly as is partition magic
