question: http://www

sometimes i see a link with http:/www.xxx and sometimes, i only see http://xxx; what's the difference between the two formats?

dont laugh if this is real basic :) i have always wondered about it.

Bro it's so not to active de direct link of de web site in question.
Also ftp would end up like dis f**:// or f*p:// etc. read dis foot note here bro ok. look at dis :> http://forum.cdrsoft.cc/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6831

Taken from our Forum Rules section:> 1. No direct links (links to posts in our forum are okay)! Links should look like this w*w.somewhere.com or h**p://www.somewhere.com

no no, that's not what i meant; i understand what you are saying; my question is more general than that - i.e. not specifically related to this forum but i wanted to know about the url format ; sometimes i dont' see the www and i wonder if that makes a difference.

edit: for example, the link for this forum is

http://forum.cdrsoft.cc/

instead of http://www.forum; why is that so? when i put www in, the link wouldn't work

I could give you a very detailed technical explaination :D
Will try to keep it simple :)

porn.com
is a top level domain

for every single top level domain you are able to register unlimited subdomains, like:
xxx.porn.com

a very common and most used subdomain is the www.porn.com

such as we use forum.cdrsoft.cc :)
So, the DNS (domain name server) for your domain, stores all the info about your domain. Like IPs, subdomains and so on.
If I would only setup the DNS for www.cdrsoft.cc, the site wouldn´t be accessible ..
wit cdrsoft.cc for example.
There are wildcards of course like *.cdrsoft.cc :)
So what we do is:
directing forum.cdrsoft.cc to this place ...
and all the rest *.cdrsoft.cc to the main site itself. You may check by using iamnothere.cdrsoft.cc or something like this.
so if you try to access a page like porn.com and they didn´t setup their DNS with wildcards or something you might get a Error 404 message. www.porn.com will work ..
so :)
www.porn.com -> Top level domain (TLD)
xxx.porn.com -> Subdomain

So it is just a setting of the DNS for the particular domain.
IF you got questions, just shoot :)

No problem ....
I am already far too deep into this technical stuff :D
Hope I did explain it in a understoodable way :)

LOL well, not entirely clear from your explanation, but it got me a good start with some buzz words and i went to whatis.com and they explained in more detail;

i typed in http://iamsoconfused.forum.cdrsoft..... and it works lol; thanks for the lesson.

BTW, i m forever greatful for the help i have had from this forum; i wish i could help out other members more but i m not as technically strong as a lot of members here :( but i guess it's ok; eventually, i'll get there and i can contribute more the level that i want.
