Question about RAID style/type IDE PCI cards ....?

Ok anyone out there using PCI RAID type IDE cards or have used them !?

I'm looking to get one as its a cheaper alternative to getting a RAID M-BOARD :)

what are your experiences for data transfer rate !?

are they reliable ?!

I want to have one in my system so i dont have to bin my PLEXTOR burner as it will be faster for CDR/W burning than the pioneer A05 i have and i dont want to bin my TOSHIBA DVD rom drive as reading from this will also no doubt be faster for DVD backup for a read device and also possible dvd to dvd backup :)

At the miniute i have it set as 8gb windows xp boot disk hd in my system filling the one ide channel along with the TOSHIBA DVD , the plextor is on the other ide with the 20gb at the moment :)

So i would like to have the plextor and my 20gb HD on the PCI IDE card

With the A05 on the board ide with the 8GB

and the TOSHIBA DVD with the 80GB on the other channel

my system is

a 2200 AMD "Thoroughbred"

256 DDR

plextor CDRW

TOSHIBA dvdrom

8gb boot drive (just for XP and i dont really wanna get rid of it and start over !)

20gb drive

sitting in the packing an 80gb drive

and a pioneer A05 :)

running windows XP PRO :)

NTFS of course :)

My aims are DVD backups and dvd 2 SVCD following the excellent tutorials here :)

cdr/w burning and other stuff etc etc :)

i want/need to know the best way to set things up and will it all work ok !?

not sure as to what the data transfers are like with these PCI IDE cards are they reliable will the plextor work without problems with the 20gb !?

i intend to use the 80gb with the TOSHIBA on a normal channel with the A05 on the other normal channel with the 8gb as first thoughts this may be more reliable than having the A05 and the 80gb on the PCI IDE CARD !?

any help on this and thoughts thanks in advance :)

btw sorry for being so long winded but i need to get the right answers so i have to provide enough information :)

Make sure you have a pci ide card and not just a pci raid card first. For the 105 its best to have it as Master on ide2 with nothing else on that ide ribbon. The others can be set up as you wish.

Vipey, why do you want a PCI IDE RAID card? They are more expensive than a PCI IDE card, and only useful if you have 2 identical harddrives(or plan to buy)to setup that raid.
IMHO,the best configuration:

8gb as master on primary channel of IDE card
80gb as master on sec. channel of IDE card
20gb as slave on sec channel of IDE card

Plextor as master on your mobo primary ide
Toshiba as slave on that channel
Pioneer as master on your mobo secondary ide

There are only a few PCI IDE cards that handle atapi devices properly,so you better only connect harddrives to it..

There was a hack for converting Promise cards to RAID - not sure if they managed to get it wiped out though.

Some cheapie RAID cards here, but check the mixed reviews! - the have a UK and US branch, not sure where else they ship to:

If buying a complete RAID SET (controller and 2 drives) - GO SATA!

think what he really wants is just to use as extra ide slots

most raid card can be used as just ide controllers

OKIES thanks for the info guys :)

@ roady i did say in my post that they were ide/raid type :)

as was not sure in this case which i would need.. but now i know a plain pci card will be fine :)

they are cheap enough to buy about £15 here in the uk with 2 x ide ports :)

will get one when i get round to it and start using this darn system properly at long last lol :)

will keep you all informed how i get on when i get round to getting one lol till then this 80gb sits in its package lol :)

why just h/d on card?

i know on my raid onboard it says in book not to put cdrom's on but not looked in to it tbh

I have an Abit NF7-S mobo,so my next hd will probably be a sata, but ATM,I'm still using my Promise Ultra100 TX2 card

my setup:

180GB WD as master on primary IDE card channel
80GB Maxtor as master on secondary IDE card channel
LiteOn 52246S as master on primary mobo ide channel
JLMS 166S as slave on primary mobo ide channel
Plex Premium as master on secondary mobo ide channel
Sony DRU500A as slave on secondary mobo ide channel

and an overclocked LiteOn LDW 411S->811S in an external usb2 case...

U can put ROMS on some cards I believe but they are designed for Fixed drives especially the cheaper ones
The very first RAID cards from Promise were able to detect cd drives but after bios ver. 2.0 the cards no longer can detect them, I don´t remember where read it but they stated that RAID functions weren´t able to perform as they should when an optical drive is in the same channel with a HD.

This is not the case with big RAID cards but because expensive RAID come with a small cpu integrated in the controller then they are capable to separate every device attached.
