Protected Disc??

Hello everyone,

I'm new to DVD burning but I just built a new System from the ground up and have one of the best Burner's out there (Plextor PX 708A). Unfortunately I've never burnt a DVD and although I have some DVD burning software (Easy CD/DVD Creator Basic) I'm having some trouble backing up my DVD collection onto DVD-R.

Here is what's happening:

When I place a DVD movie into my drive and launch Easy CD & DVD to try and copy it using Disc Copier, it shows 'Protected Disc' and I can't burn it.

Can any of you tell me how I can unprotect the disc so that I can make a backup? My primary reason for purchasing a DVD burner was so that I could backup all my movies and only use the ones that I burn.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

BTW, I did look through the Beginners section of this site but I don't understand why I would need to do the things that are mentioned there when I have this DVD burning software already.

Thanks for your reply in advance!

You have Easy CD/DVD Cremator. ;) (netman) If you did some reading in the forum you would find out that some of the best DVD back up software is free.

You can use DVD Decrypter to rip your move to the hard drive and it will take away the dvd protection and did I say its free. :D If its a DVD 5 you can burn it with that software. If its a DVD 9 then you can use DVD Shrink to shrink it to fit on A DVD-R. Did I say that was free too. :D

Well it looks like your software dosen't take out DVD protection.

I would say read a little use the search try some of the Tutorials buy a DVD+RW if you don't already have one. But like I said DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink are some of the easiest or if you want to spend some money and have it done for you try DVD X Copy XPress. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

DVD Burning

If It was that easy Stresstest this forum would probably not be here.

I would just add that EZCD Cremator is not my or most peeps cup of tea

My Tip is bin it

Many s/ware packages better than that <> trust me.

As has been said peruse the forum especially the Tutorials much to learn but as the wise man said

I Know not how but I am willing to learn guide me master
But the fool says

I know it all U can teach me nothing master
;)

Answer in a nutshell:

1. All DVDs you buy are copy-protected with CSS so you cannot just copy the files off of it to your PC.
2. Legally, you cannot buy software to de-CSS unless you get DVDXCopy suite, or other such software, or a freeware solution such as DVD Shrink.
3. You will not be able therefore to use EZCD, Nero, etc to just copy a DVD; you have to decrypt either on the fly with a software driver program, or unencrypt and burn.

That's funny, My Plextor cost the same or less than the current DVD writers out there, $240 so I'm not sure why people are complaining about their price.

As for EZCD, I received it FREE with the drive so there you go.

I'll check out DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, thanks!

Speaking of DVD X Copy, what do you guys think of this software?

My primary concern when I looked at that particular piece of software is that it's going to try and compress the burn which means it won't have as good a quality of a burn. Heck, I have the same concern with DVD Shrink as well, doesn't it provide less quality burn if it's having to compress it?

Do any of you have a real experience with this package and if so, how does it handle large movies such as Lord of the Rings etc? Does it copy dual layer or compress?

Sorry if this is somewhat off topic here in this thread, I didn't see a thread where it would be more appropriate place to post.

Thanks for the feedback ipdave, I really appreciate it!

LOL... :D

Are you performing a stress test right now?The mere mention of Easy Cd Creator causes most senior members extreme stress. ;) Nothing personal, and I know it ships with most new drives in North America. It must be some kind of conspiracy..LOL! :D

We are trying our best to help you.

Now to your other question...If a backup is too large to fit on one disc it will need to be compressed.A loss of quality is inevitable, but some software fairs better than others.Instant Copy seems to win as best overall, but it has a steep learning curve, and is slow.

Check out our dvd tutorial section for a tutorial by Laz,it uses freeware stuff, and has acceptable results when compared with other programs. ;)

lmao!

Yes it does ship with just about everything these days it seems, even with things not related to burning lol!

I however don't think it's appropriate to alienate new users just because it happens to ship with every drive in north america! A polite suggestion that it may not be the best thing to use should suffice and then maybe point out why would have been much more productive.

Now, getting back to the important stuff!

I think I see where this is going. There is no solution for burning it a real 1 to 1 copy then, probably due to the media and the drives themselves that we have available and maybe in part due to the protective measures that are on the originals. It also sounds as if the best way to get the best results is to burn it slow as in the case of the Instant Copy, which is probably due to the fact that it's not compressing as much as the other faster solutions that might be available, giving it the best quality burn. I'll find Instant Copy via google and see what it's all about, thanks for suggesting it.

Yeah I've read the tutorials, their a good starting point. I do however have some reservations concerning the whole ForceASPI17 & aspichk thing, I gues what I could do is just back up all the ASPI dll's and files that I already have on this box and give it a whirl.

Why exactly is it necessary to install ASPI17? It doesn't really go into detail within the tutorial so I'd like some further explanation if it's possible.

At any rate, thanks for the feedback! I'm already getting a lot of knowledge from this and other sites concerning this subject matter and I appreciate the effort!

See ya!

Okay...not trying to alienate anyone....sorry if it seemed that way. ;)

Instant Copy Cd/dvd will be a bugger to learn.Laz's method may be the best way to go right now.

You have a handle on the backup issue, special programs are needed to to do them.I think the main reason Easy cd/dvd creator is shipped is because it can't do anything with protected discs. ;)

As for aspi, the versions/methods shown are needed for many cdr/dvd applications.

Killaspi.bat removes old layers.installaspi.bat will install a proper layer ,this is aproven aspi layer,it works the best. ;)

Yeah you could be right, but I'll check out Instant Copy anyway and see what it entails.

I thought the same thing about the EZCD after reading some articles concerning companies being sued for providing software that does DVD burning of protected media, which btw I think is BS, but that's a whole nother thread!

OK, I'll take your word for the aspi stuff and install it. I'll back up my originals and just give it a whirl along with all the other methods described in the tutorials you have here. Thanks for the feedback, I'll let you know how my burning goes :)

BTW, don't worry about the other junk, you have nothing to apologize for, it happens in these forums. I can take care of most issues myself, but others that come here may not feel this is a friendly place to get answers and is the primary reason for my comments. I run several forums myself (different subject matter of course) so no worries, I know how it goes.

The site has been a big help so keep up the great work!
