Processor Speed

Hi,

I have an Abit SH6 motherboard which according to Abit "Supports Intel Pentium II/III/Celeron Slot 1 processor up to 1GHz based on 66/100/133MHz FSB"

I installed a Celeron 1.30 GHz on my WINXP SP1 system and it seems to be working fine @ 100MHz front side bus. However, I am concern if this is safe for my motherboard and I am unaware of any future problems this can create.

I greatly appreciate your input on this matter as my experience/knowledge is limited.

updated:
When I boot up on POST, a message said "CPU has been changed or ..." press F1 to continue or DEL to change" --->so I have to press F1 every time I want to use the computer and I can't shutdown normally anymore. I'm okay with pressing F1 but if you know a solution to my system inability to shutdown completely, please help.

You probably have to change a couple of settings in your bios to match the new cpu. Most bios can be accessed by pressing esc or del or enter during startup. Poke around and see what your cpu related settings are set at. Don't change anything unless you are sure that the current setting is wrong.

Thanks for contributing.

For the shutdown problem I got it fixed by going to Control Panel and Power Options-->Advanced-->When I press the power button on my computer: Do Nothing.

Second, I can get rid of the message that the bios displays (the one I was talking about earlier) by disable SoftMenu. However, doing that I had shutdown problem. So I came to a compromise, message tolerable but no shutdown unacceptable.

Now I still need to know if it is safe to operate my comp @ 1.30GHz when mobo is rated for 1GHz? I haven't made any setting changes in my bios, it is automatically detected.

Thank You.

Just a quick reply here: late and need my ZZzzZZzzz

I'm sure someone can give a more details reply but if it's working then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Also the spec's for your motherboard may not be correct. My mobo is rated to work with AMD Athlon XP 2000 + for a max' CPU. I got hold of a 2200 + CPU, dropped it in and it works just fine. Did a second upgrade to a 2400 + and surprise surprise that works just fine too. So much for the mobo manufacturer's info !!

....DreeM :)

BIOS Version?
http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/bios_revision.php?categories=1&model=100

According to this, a previous update added support for 1.1GHz Celeron, but the board does not support the Tulatin core - and since I've been in the AMD camp for ages, I don't know if a 1.3GHz Celeron is Tulatin or not.
It appears the 1.2/1.3 ARE Tulatins - though that was one site. The 1.1 is also a Tulatin (according to some) but the 1.1 is supported (maybe 2 versions.
There also seems to be a case where later revisions of the chipset can handle them.

One issue with Tulatins is lower voltage, so if not properly supported, it may be running over-voltage.
** I'm basing this on ONE site - and it's quite possible that several CPU speeds were available in Tulatin and non-Tulatin versions.

If it's not at that level already, the latest BIOS (7U) may be worth a try
