Season's greetings to one and all. Three months ago I purchased a Samsung (ts-h552) dual layer dvd writer. It worked fine for a couple of weeks. All of a sudden it stopped reading blank cd's. Couple of days later it stopped reading all cd's and dvd's. I took the writer back to the shop. A couple of days later they gave me a replacement as they could not fix the other one. Guess what ? the new drive is doing exactly what the old drive did. I've updated my firmware, aspi,drivers and have an updated win xp with service pack 2.

Therefore I beg of any of you proffesor's out there for solutions. take the drive back is not an option just yet.

Spank you in advance....

the expiration you describe really points to a hardware fault; so it seems your replacement is gone the same way;
posible causes: real material/fabrication defects, overheating, dust/smoke, shakes/shocks, wear and tear;

Oh No !

Thanx for replying. So you think I should return the drive. Is it possible that something else could be the cause (maybe win xp ? ) I mean,they could give me another drive with the same problem. And then ?

boot onto an old W98SE boot floppy (http://www.bootdisk.com), choose "CD support" in the boot menu, insert your Windows CD and try to examine the content in plain DOS; so you leave out all drivers/software for testing purposes;

if you have the same problems in DOS, then go for a warranty replacement; maybe for an other brand this time;

There's nothing wrong with this burner... it might not be top banana, as the Samsung RAM chips, USB pen drives and LCD screens are, but it's a pretty decent burner.

problem found !!!

Thanks to all you guys who tried to assist me. But I think DURACELL was right when he said I should take the drive back. I have tried this drive on some friends pc's but it still gives the same problem. Hence I think it is the drive. Also I wish to add that my dvd rom and cd writer on my other pc are Samsungs. They have never given me problems ! Yes their dvd writer is a big dissapointment therefore I will go with another make....BENQ ?

you can also consider the Nec 3500
or an LG 4120B (12x), 4160B (16x), 4163B (16x) but not the 4161B!
or the Pioneer 108;
as you can see there are still a few good choices; :)

Thanks

Many thanks. I will take your advice. But down here in South Africa Sony dual layer Dvd writers are considered the cream of the crop. Only problem is you end up paying R1000.00 when you coul pay R600.00 or less for L.G or Samsung. Nevermind because L.G does seem an okay replacement..Once again thanks for taking the time to reply..

Sony did never produce a DVD writer, "their" drives are re-branded Pioneer drives; :)
Up to Sony 530, they DID make the drives themselves- even if some parts were borrowed.
But Pioneer? How come I think all current Sony drives are made by Lite-On?

Sounds familiar...
The DRU700A is a Liteon 832S, while the DRU710A is a Liteon 1633S (latest firmware is like "US model" 1633S - with 1653S functionality).
Lots of Sony OEM versions - D22A and others, generally Liteon rebrands with very poor firmware availability and NOT RECOMMENDED.

Cream of the crop? - a vastly overpriced rebrand of a drive that many only value for it's Kprobe error scanning ability

sony dvd writer

Yes I don't know about your country but here in South Africa we are led to believe that the Sony DRU710A is the best dual layer dvd writer around ! Also on the best list is the A-OPEN DU1608/ARR,BENQ DW 1610, BTC (uses Sony components.), GIGABYTE W0404 and LG GSA 4120B. They are all dual layer Dvd writers. I haven't taken the faulty Samsung writer back yet buy I hope the store can work something out for me..The rand is low and I need another Dvd writer.
