problems with protected dvd burning

Can anybody give me a bit of advice please? I'm new to this DVD burning lark and, having first tried using the standard burning equipment on my computer and then found this forum and followed your wonderous advice pages on installing ForceASPI and aspichk, I've been using DVDShrink 3.2 to rip a protected DVD and Nero to burn onto a Xerox DVD+R4.7GB (these work fine with unprotected DVDs). However, during the burning process, an error message appears stating 'Burn process failed at 4x (5520KB/S)'. I've had a more technically literate mate take a look at it, and he hasn't got a clue what's going wrong. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Burn at a lower speed or Use Recordnow Max may help

Your problem could be Nero, Media. Well Nero sucks also cheap media could be the problem too.
Well you can post your "NeroHistory.log" file and we can take a look.
Try a program like DVD Identifier and tell us who makes the media.
You could also burn at a lower speed.
What I like doing is ripping it with DVD decrypter then using shrink and save it as and ISO then burn it with DVD decrypter.
So post back with some more info and we will see if we can help. :)

Cheers for the advice guys, I've tried burning at a lower speed the slowest option being 2.4x(3,324 KB/s) to no avail. I also have Recordnow! Version 7, but it doesn't seem to be able to burn the files from Dvdshrink as a dvd-video, but will copy them as files. The nero log is as follows (I've highlighted some of the more relevant parts in Bold):-

Hope that makes sense to someone out there!!!!!
My own theory is that the dvd writer does not measure up to the task at hand rather than a disc incompatibility.
I'll get more information on the dvd writer to you ASAP!
Many thanks!!!

"Power Calibration Error" - that seems pretty unambiguous, but then it s possible for an error code to be returned that doesn't mean exactly what it says - if the drive/media combination has worked in all other situations, then it IS rather suspicious - try some of the tutorials here, to be sure your rip / reauthor and burn method is good.

The ND2100 - not seen one of those before... it's the +R only version of the 2500 - but I believe it hacks to a 2510 (+/-R and DL media too!) with herrie's firmware - Herrie also has many media tweaks in the firmware

http://www.herrie.org - very much AT YOUR OWN RISK - don't come running to us or Herrie if you wreck your drive!

It' a real strange one. I've tried DVD Identifier, but to no avail, the prorgam failed to obtain any info on the writer itself, all I can tell you that it's an 8x DVD writer that came with the Compaq machine. The fact that I can do an exact copy of an unprotected dvd with Recordnow! ver.7, and when it comes to copying files from Dvdshrink using Nero, the project falls flat on its face at the burning stage, is quite excruciating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nero 6.X and RecordNow any version do orgies if they live in the same box!
Trash one of them... picking between Nero 6 and RecordNow 7 is a difficult choice, I think best solution is trashing BOTH of them...
Last great RecordNow version was 4.50/60, and Nero 6.X is Nero 5.5X plus some useless candies, plus LOADS of unnecessary trouble...

Well I know you guys keep saying RNM and Nero 6 are incompatable, well not sure how my system is then as I have Record Now Max 4.60 and Nero 6.3.1.20 (and have had lots ot earlier versions as well) and I have no conflicks in burning at all. Nero works and so does RNM. I can have both open and burning at the same time, one to a CDR in my LiteOn and the other to a DVDR in my Pioneer. That doesnt sound like they are incompatable to me :D

Power calibration error

Is a very typical error of crappy media, try getting some decent branded media like Ritek or TY and try again.

As far as media goes, a mate sugested Verbatim discs (I'll try to get a hold of some of these or Ritek tomorrow). The reason I haven't went down this avenue yet was because the Xerox discs I have worked with Recordnow! when using the 'exact copy' option on an unprotected disc, and I presumed these disks would be ok when burning with Nero. And while on the subject of Recordnow! (this may seem a bit of a naive question, but I AM NEW TO ALL THIS!) When upgrading Recordnow!, can you upgrade the software to burn a disc as a dvd-video? (this option appears on Nero as you all know), as the version of Recordnow!7 is just a barebones version that came with the machine. If the media experiment fails, I may move onwards to the PX burning engine!!!

I dont have RNM v7 (and from all reports I dont intend upgrading to it) but with 4.5, 4.6 & 4.61, you just load the AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders into burning a DAta disk and it then recognises it as a Video-DVD. You need to go into options and select to Close the session though.

@Duracell, I know what you mean m8, however, I have use Prassi from version 1 with Nero from about ver 3 onwards and have ALWAYS had both on my system (from Win98, 98SE, ME, 2000 and now XP) running all sorts of M/B's over the years (must admit, NEVER and Intel CPU though :D) and they have ALWAY run faultlessly. I have always regularly upgraded to next version as they are released as well. The only thing I have never run it on is an Intel M/B with an Intel CPU, maybe they are the real problem?

It's alive! The problem is solved:- This morning I shoved in a Ritek disc - same error messege appeared! So I went down to the local shop and got a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-107D, This thing is smokin' ! No more errors!

Strangely enough, when I told the guy in the shop about my predicament he told me that the NEC writers were too unpredictable and only good as a drinks holder! And after the grief it's given me, I had to agree with him!

Thanks for the advice........... LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEC + herrie's tweaked firmware, are generally highly praised - though you really can't go wrong with a Pioneer.

If you can't get a warranty replacement on the NEC, you migt as well try the herrie firmware, if the drive is a chucker otherwise.

Ditto the above.
ChickenMan: which drive have you set as the master ? I have never tried burning in both at the same time

I have my Pioneer 108 as Master & LiteOn Combo 52x as slave and both on the secondary IDE port. I have had them on all sorts of combinations at times and have never had a problem when it works as Master and not as Slave. I also have a Promise ATA133 PCI card and they work fine from there as well.

I dont make it a habit of burning with both at the same time, just do it from time to time to check the stability of my system.
