Problems running setup files

Hi. Can anyone suggest any reasons why, when I run downloaded setup files for applications, at some point in the installation, I get error messages like:

1. The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify it's integrity, and try again.

2. and with an Install Shield setup:
1628: Failed to complete installation.

3. An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.
Abort / Retry.

Now the strange this is, some of the setups I've tried are backed up installations that I have used many times in the past so I can guarantee their integrity. They are burnt on CD and I know they work 100% but not in the last 2 or so weeks, especially things I've downloaded from the net. I even tried installing the SP3 update which apparently can fix incompatibilities with software and crashing but that got so far through and came up with errors, so I tried downloading the 124mb file that doesn't rely on an internet connection to run but when I ran it, the blue progress bar got to the end and said the file(s) were corrupt! What is the problem? Could it be RAM related?

Thanks.
