Problems Ripping dvd's

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I'm having some problems ripping certain dvd's. Some rip just fine...others don't. I tried ripping certain dvd's with DVD Decrypter and it comes up with error after error. The weird thing is that the dvd's look just fine and play perfectly in my DVD player. Also, my friend ripped the dvd just fine...(yes it was one of the same ones I tried) The few I've tried with no success are Vandread: The Second Stage, Escaflowne The Movie, and Armitage III.(yes I'm into Anime) I have a NEC DVD+RW 1100A.

Edit: Grammer mistakes...who ever uses that stuff anyway?

Welcome HuntbyNight to the forum. Are your dvd's clean? Just use a tissue and a little alcohol. Is your drive clean? A cd head cleaner should take care of that. And are you multi-tasking while your trying to rip the dvd? Try to let the computer just work on it's own during the rip. Have you updated the firmware for the drive?

To The-Poacher:
I tried ripping in both file and ISO mode.

The only ripper I've tried is my DVD-burner since its the only thing I have that can rip them.

They are original DVD's.

They play in my standalone just fine... a skip or two on the Escaflowne DVD.

Since I can't even rip them I haven't tried to compress the DVD's that need compressing.

To Laz:
I am using version 3.1.6.0 of DVD Decrypter.

To Blane:
I had previously updated my firmware to 10GE (it came with my Dell computer). Also, since it is brand new, I doubt it needs cleaning. The DVD's look clean...but I'll try cleaning them and report back.

Just to add..check the settings tab in Dvd Decryptor.Under Devices make sure fast error skip isn't enabled.Under I/O make sure ignore read errors isn't checked, and read retries is set to 20.;)
What aspi settings are you using too? Also what O/S are you using, and what aspi version??

Quote....from another post i made here ......... you could download dod speed ripper from file mirrors site h**p://filemirrors.com/ just enter "dodsrwin" no quotes i found 3 results try using that to rip the disk
try this :)

To woody

All the settings were as you said. I use Windows XP. I'm not sure what my aspi settings are...do you mean the option in DVD Decrypter under Interface? Its set at SPTI.

To VIPER_1069

I tried out DOD DVD Speed Ripper and I got "Drive would not Authenticate." error whenever I tried to rip a file off my DVD's.

unzip and use this chkaspi program to check that you have a valid and working /complete set of aspi drivers/dll files :)

let us know your results :)

chkaspi attached :)

Ah...aspi layer...right. I ran that ASPI Verification program and it detected no problems. I have version 4.60(1021). Should I still install the ASPI layer that Master gave a link to?

Nope..leave it as it is.Aspi is fine.;) I'm kinda baffled now.If you are ripping with your Dvd writer, that seems to be the culprit.Maybe a firmware upgrade will cure it,or perhaps a separate reader. The best two rippers are Dvd decrypter, and Smartripper btw.

Alright, I tried out Smartripper and it seems exactly the files I can't copy are the ones that Smartripper says are still locked! I tried playing these DVD's on my comp before(with my burner) and right at a certain point(right where the files that are giving me trouble are) they freeze up. Everything past that point won't play. My standalone skips once but continues playing at the same point where my comp would freeze. Very strange...Unless a better solution presents itself, I guess I should invest in a seperate DVD-ROM. Any recommendations on a good and inexpensive DVD-ROM? I want one that can actually READ a DVD.:p

Edit: Added the word "once" after "skips" so that people wouldn't think the DVD's skip all the way through the rest of the movie.

One last question..Do you have a Dvd player software installed?Like Win Dvd or Pwer Dvd?Playing part of the movie before ripping should unlock it.

One of the Liteon Dvd rom drives like the 163,165,0r 166 are the best ripping choices.

I have PowerDVD installed. The DVD's play just fine until a certain point (which would seem to be the point at which I can't rip the discs anymore). That file and ones past it are still locked (at least SmartRipper says they are locked). As for DMA, I never changed that so it should be on. But...I can't seem to find where that option is in Windows XP. Write caching is enabled though...which may be the same thing in XP. But, I really have no idea. So I have one last question, where is a good place to buy one of the drives recommended above (or equally good ones)? Thanks everyone for all the advice, great forum.

The Liteon drives can be found at most computer stores, and online retailers.Depends on your location.

DMA can be enabled by going to control panel>system>hardware>device manager.Click on IDE atapi controllers, and choose the channel your writer is on>properties.
