Problem with Windows 98, Office and (propably) Symantec Winfax

I have windows 98 and every time i try to run microsoft word i get the message "Microsoft visual Basic. Runtime Error 2147024809 (80070057). Can't move focus to the control because it is invisible not enabled, or of a type that does not accept the focus.". Also the office toolbar on the upper side of the screen does not appear. A similar message appears when i connect to the inetrnet and i try to visit a site. It asks to download "Visual Basic Scripting Support" but when i press "yes" it asks for some files from the windows update cd which i don't have. I have checked the hard disk for viruses, didn't find any, i tried to uninstall and reinstall office 2000 with no result. I also haev symantec winfax installed, i don't know if this is related to the problem. Any suggestions??

try uninstalling anything related with visual basic in your program folder.
with internet explorer go into tools>internet options>advanced and the sixth line (check box) where it says disable script debuging should be "checked" > while the seventh check box should be unchecked.
That should fix your internet exlorer problem as for office i would need more info like what you do for this problem to appear, when did it start appear and is it consistent or has also different behaviour.
My best guess is that if you haven't installed visual basic office might have because when i have VB installed it always butts in trying to debug something or aother.
try reinstalling office with a custom installation deactivating anything related to VB (visual basic).
if i think of something else i will let you know.
good luck

It seems that you MS Office installation medium is cannibalized (or just bad), and certain VB6 files are either corrupt or missing.

I'm assuming that you're using Win98 2nd edition. If you're using the first edition, you should seriously consider upgrading it: the second ed. contains many, many integral bug fixes.
