Problem with Smartripper ripping a DVD

Well I thought I might add that saucy little vixen called "Xena" to my collection. I have all 6 of the season 1 DVDs. When it came to ripping the 4th one, Smartripper wouldn't initialise past the 5th vob file.

I am using a Lite-on 166s DVD reader under XP. I couldn't see any defects on the DVD itself. I then tried the DVD in another computer using a Pioneer 16X DVD reader under 98 and it read fine. However that computer only had a 10 gig HD so I couldn't rip the DVD there.

I pulled the Pioneer out of my 98 machine and put it into my XP machine and I had the same problem that happened with the Lite-on.

Has anybody had this happen to them? I suspected that it might have something to do with the ASPI layers but after installing adaptecs aspi layer v4.71 it still didn't fix the problem :(

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Cwluc. Any help is better than no help at all :)

I already have Nero installed but I don't know if it automatically installed it's aspi. I'll willing to give anything a try.

I know I am about to get hell for it...but I have not had much success with any of these newer apps claiming to fix your aspi, best way for me was finding a real set of apsi driver and copying it your Windows\system32\ folder, g'luck

Sorry about the removal and such of the post, Nero doesn’t copy the aspi into your system folder…and watch from updates of other programs (easy cd…) cause it will forcefully overwrite it without mention…

I have similar problems with some Disney dvds. I sometimes have to rip it twice to get it to work.
It sometimes works better if u play the movie for a few seconds too.
Dvd decryptor is useful as a backup ripper.

I had the same problem ripping the second dvd of the Lawrence of arabia set. Smart Ripper did not rip the last of the vob files completely. I used dvd decryptor and it ripped all the vobs correctly. I have used SR before without problems, but not with a 2 dvd set. Perhaps there is a problem with the dual layer double cd format. But dvd decryptor was fine performing the saem task.

Thanks for your input guys (and gals:) ). Looks like I'll be switching to DVDdecryptor when Xena comes around next.

I'll also install that nero aspi layer and see if that fixes it.

Thanks Chickenman, but I'm not even sure it is the aspi layer that is causing the probs.

As for win2k - installing that would cut into my game time (not to mention my game compatability) :)

Besides if it is the apsi layer then a quick copy of a few files to my system directory is better than a re-install. Either way, I'll have to do some experimenting when I get the DVDs again.
