Problem With AVI's That Have AC3

Hi all,

I'm trying to covert a couple of avi's that i have but am having a slight problem......... Both the avi's have ac3 soundtracks and were split files so when joined are around 1.4 or 1.5 Gb. I use TMPGenc to convert the avi's ready for putting onto DVD's but when i get to the final stage of the process before conversion it shows that the smallest it can get the file size down to is around 135% of capacity...... Is there anything i can do to get the filesize down to 100% as it won't let me move the amount down, it does allow me to adjust it upwards... i.e. better quality. I've burnt joined avi's that don't have AC3 audio ok and they were also around the 1.4Gb size it's just these files that have AC3 audio that i'm having the problem with.

Cheers

Dave.

TMPGEnc sometimes has problems detecting the real length of a file. Try using the source range filter to tell it how long the file really is.

Thanks for the suggestions..............I tried using The FilmMachine to convert the files but the quality comes out very very poor.....Really bright video with colours just blurring into each other......

I tried using the source range function in TMPGEnc to set start and end points at the start and begining of the movie but it gives the end file the same size......

The only other thing i can think to try is to manually set the bitrate of the video down to around 1900 bit/second.... this lowers the indication bvar at the bottom of the screen to around the limit of the DVD but still shows as having a bit rate of 3000 in the box above and a file size that is 135% of the disc....Even though in the expert settings i set the video bitrate to 1900 !!!! what sort of quality would 1900 bit rate be???

Any other ideas??

Cheers

Then you have codec probelm. I'd suggest you uninstall the DivX and Xvid codec you have installed and install the 2 I recommend in the DivX to DVDR Tutorial.

For a full sized MPEG2 stream, 1900 bitrate is very poor. A "normal" commercial dvd is about 6000 average ranging from 5000 min to 8000 max.
