Hello everyone... I'm new.
I apologize in advance if this is not the correct place for my thread.
I have a Presario 6000 series with an intel p4 board.
I bought my computer a little over a year ago with xp pre-installed from circuit city, and it worked fine early on. At that time I had a dvd-rom and a 40x cdrw installed. I later purchased an hp dvd writer 300i from best buy, and replaced my dvd-rom with the dvd+rw. After a few months I guess, I noticed that the cdrw that came with my comp wouldn't read discs. It showed up fine in the bios, and it functioned correctly until you put ANY sort of media in it. It would attepmt to read the disc, but nothing happened. No error messages or anything. If I clicked on the drive from explorer it would say "please insert disc in drive." Whether I had any kind of disc in it or not, this would happen. SoI took out my cdrw and replaced it with my original dvd-rom. Now my dvd rom works fine, but a few month after the switch my dvd+rw started doing the EXACT SAME THING! I have sp1 installed and all drivers, firmware, etc. is up to date. SInce my DVD+RW is less than a year old, hp has agreed to replace it free of charge. I'm worried about this issue coming up again. I've switched my drives from primary, secondary. etc... and have come up with every combo possible. My results never changed. What is my problem?!?!?!
BTW.... I do a bunch of downloading and stuff. Is it possible for viruses hidden in software to cause this sort of damage to a physical device???
I know it sounds silly, but I just can't come up with anything else. ANy advice would be great, and I apologize for the long post.
