Problem when trying to install Windows XP in a 200GB Hard Disk

I tried to install Windows XP (without sp1 intergrted) in a 200GB JB Western Digital but at the moment where the os asks to create the partition it can "see" only 130GB. Is there a solution so Windows XP can use the full size of the disk? Thanks!

Hmm - well theoretically NTFS in WXP can support partitions of up to 8TB(terabytes) - so it shouldnt have a problem seeing afull 200GB Partition ? ? ? ?

Try to make a partition of 200GB before using WXP setup. In other words try without using the WXP setup to make the partition.

Why do you want to install it into 200GB? why not partition it, put XP into,say,10GB,and use the rest for programs etc!
If you install into 200gig and get problems,it's going to be a big re-install.!

It sounds like you need a bios update for your motherboard in order to see the full Hard Drive. Older boards will have this problem, but most will have bios fixes available now.

I have GigaByte 8pe667 so i don't think the problem is related with the bios because it is shown as 200gb. Maybe the problem is related with the version of winxp that i have (greek). You think i should try to format it with Partition Magic 8 or with the western digital utility?

Reporting the correct size for the newest hardrives is a mobo issue, check your manufacturer for the latest MB flash upgrade. Also the utility disk that came w/ your harddrive should work around the problem.

I just bought an 80 Western Digital. The Disk Management utilites that came with it weren't sufficient. I had to go to Western Digitals web site and download the latest version of the disk utilities that have been specially modified for working with Windows XP. I would try there before flashing the BIOS motherboard.

The problem is related with Windows XP. The one with SP1 does'n have this issue. You can see the the article 303013 in Microsoft knowledge base for more details. I used an Ata 100 promise controller with XP without sp1 but it is important to use the drivers provided by the promise disk because the ones that come with Windows XP "see" the disk as 130gb only. As for the Western digital utility, this is usefull only if you want to format as fat32. When i use the latest version of this utility to format a disk as fat32 and install win98se, scnadisk reports an error at the beggining of the instalation.

infini,

You mention using a Promise ata 100 controller. There are a couple of models of Promise ata 100. Promise has issued at least one BIOS update to get over the 130GB limit on their controllers to enable the 48 bit adressing necessary for huge drives. Check your BIOS revision on the Promise controller and update it if you don't have the latest.

i c - if thats the case - u can always try slip streaming sp1 with the wxp setup files - that should resolve the problem during setup. Though to slipstream xp u need xp.

otherwise the messier approach is to let setup make a 130gb partition - the update to sp1 after installation then enlarge the partition with the disk management in administrative tools.

but also consider gilberts advice.

could you just fdisk the drive into 2X100 gig drives then install XP on one and have the other for games n stuff? that way xp can see al 200 gig.

I had the same problem with a 80 gb drive, it would dedtect it as a 33 gb drive. Altough I did not install my OS on it I still had some 25 gig of files on that drive, so first I cried like a baby just thinking that I lost my 25 gig of music and then I found this util on IBM sites that made me capable of changing the size of my drive in Dos mode. I have a 2.4 ghz pentium, windows XP pro, latest Bios, so I don't think it as to do with any of these. With this tool I did not lose any of my data.....And it worked with a drive that was mot an IBM drive
Get that tool here URL http://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/hddtech/ibmfeaturetool_install_v160.exe
just follow the instruction, you need to install on a small disc and reboot in dos mode Good luck

i had a problem recently with a 120Gb Samsung. As normal i thought i knew it all , installed and couldnt see more than 80Gb. After checking the jumper positions on the back of the HDD, they were incorreectly set - you can limit the amount seen on the disc by changing/removing jumpers.

May not be the solution to your problem but worth a look all the same...

infini,

Did you ever get this probelm sorted out? I'm interested in knowing the solution to this. I was reminded of reading this thread some time back as I read about Intel's Application Accelerator. This page speaks of recognizing large drives when IAA is installed because it enables 48-LBA.

You said "the one with SP1 doesn't have this issue". Maybe that's because Windows XP Service Pack 1 adds 48-bit LBA support and you need it enabled for the other drive as well.

My issue was related with the installation of the os. I didn't care if the hard disk would be recognised after the installation. The only solution was XP with SP1
