Problem viewing DIVX/AVI files

Just today, I have lost the ability to "look ahead" in a DIVX or AVI file with WMP. As long as the file played, I have always been able to jump around within the file and watch the movie from any point. Now it plays from the beginning and any attempt to jump ahead fails, but simply returns to where it was playing at the beginning? Any thoughts on what might have caused this and better yet, how to correct it?. I run Win XP Pro and this happens with new files downloaded as well as files on my drive that I could previously view without difficulty?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

I have always had that problem with WMP ! A few work fine but most dont. I believe its the Xvid encoded avi's that cause most of this problem though. Div3.11 encodes do not seem to have this problem.

I always listen to avi files with Cyberlink Power DVD, I have tried WMP serie9 with divx pro codecs installed, I also used DIVX Player pro, but the best is power dvd, never have problem with this one.

Thank you for your responses. Not sure why it just started happening. Power DVD does still work, but it loads quite slowly on my system and I use WMP primarily for a quick look, especially for partial files that have been "fixed" via DivFix. Probably something I installed to check out and there are far too many of those a day to remember. :)

Hi ChickenMan :)
u remind me I got a few Xvid encoded avi animes and WMP said "The operation can not be performed because the pins are not connected." u got a way to work around it? i installed Xvid codec and still can't play but i can play it in VirtualDub..

Alll try playing the anime with either ZoomPlayer or BSPlayer instead.
They work better than windows player.
Myself I love my anime and use Zoom to play them all (no probs).
Hope that helps

PS
ZoomPlayer is free h**p://www.inmatrix.com

A restore to 2 days ago fixed my problem, the files play fine now. Looks like it may have been an update to latest NVIDIA drivers that caused the issue. Again, thanks for your assistance.

Thanks shadoe_phantom, I tried ZoomPlayer but still the same can't play.. :( now only seem can watch on VirtualDub, I hope VirtualDub make their own version player....
