problem playing avi/mpg on the pc

A lot of times when i watch an avi or mpg on my pc, the video stream seems to be playing for a few seconds and then stops for a few seconds; and i have to jiggle the mouse on the slider to get it to advance forward; but i have to keep babysitting it every few seconds like that, very annoying and distracting...

what do u suppose the problem is? is it b/c my computer runs out of memory playing it? it doesnt happen consistenly with the same file so i know it's not that the file is corrupted.

I have tried window media player, windvd, powerdvd, andt hey all exhibit that symptoms from time to time.

Thanks

so what do u think? btw, i do multitask a lot so that might be the cause if the answer is memory related

Playing an mpeg or avi is very memory/CPU intensive.
Try it with nothing else running and see how you go.
It might be one of your other programs you are running is causing the holdup.
