problem compressing large avi with divx

hy everyone.

i have just recorded a movie from the digital camera on the pc. the final file is over 8 gb big. i have used pinnacle studio7 to record from the camera. i recorded at the best qoality the program can provide. (should i record at a poorer quality?)

My problem now is to compress this huge file in order to write it on a cd. i followed MANY tutorials to compress it with divx 4 to 5.05 but the final output is either very large or of VERY poor quality. (what other codecs should i use to compress and with what settings??)

Please help in any way. My wedding is filmed on this file... :)

I would use the DIVX Pro 5.x codec from within VirtualDub.

1) Open your existing AVI file
2) Go to the video tab and choose Fast Recompress
3) Go to the video tab and choose Compression, then DIVX 5.x
4) Go to the properties for the DIVX codec and set the bitrate according to the length of the movie (use DVTool to compute the right bitrate)
5) Go to the audio tab and choose direct
6) Go to the file tab and choose Save As AVI

Relax and watch ESPN for a while until the encode finishes.

Actually 8GB's of DV should only be around 40mins.

One thing to consider though is that presumably it is 4:3, so you would either need to crop/resize before encoding or use MKV instead of AVI as a container so that you can set the aspect ratio.

Also I wouldn't set the audio to direct streaming as 48KHz PCM can be quite large. Compress it to say mp3, vorbis or AAC/AAC+. This will leave more space for video.

if y don't want 2 pay 4 divx pro,better get xvid,it's free,& better than divx.... ;)...a video @ >1000Kbps is good enough

I would protest serjer's comment that XviD is better than DivX lol =). I have done encodings in both (and still test them) and depending on the methods used, I still can get better quality encoding off DivX (v5.03 & up) than XviD.
I've kinda had a battle with a few anime fansub groups over this and so we decided to encode the same raw files to the same file sizes: 175MB & 233MB (aspect ratio of 640x480/368 for a 23min episode). I ended up with the best results.
The problem why people often get bad results with DivX encoding, is they try to do the same methods (or enabling things on it) they are used to before, when they had to encode with DivX 3.11 or 4.12. You cannot encode using those same techniques or you will get odd results.
However I must note that with XviD you can get better results often with lower bitrates of 1000Kbps (where as DivX can produce better results above 1000Kbps). I must say though, that there isn't too much of a noticeable difference in files roughly the same size, so it really goes down to your own biased views lol. I prefer DivX and for now I think it has a better future, but all that can change. I have yet to see results of DivX 5.1 (I will be testing it in the next 2-3 weeks) so I can't comment on that yet. I still think XVD will be the future... if it's as good as they claim. Haven't got the encoder for that yet though (have to see when that comes out).

@ least ,it's free & i won't have 2 pay a cent,except my internet connection 2 be able to download xvid codec ;)

Better quality at 1000+kbps? DivX is always blurier due to only supporting H.263 quants.

Also which build of XviD and what settings? Also have you tried any devapi4 builds?

For anime you really should check out RV9, especially with the dupe filter plugin, although I have sucessfully made VBR XviD encodings using the XviD directshow encoder.

I should also point out that you won't find devapi4 or dshow encoder binaries at the usual XviD sites.

lol, that's true serjer, but there is a free version also of DivX. If money is an object than by all means XviD, although I know a few companies that will be making DivX standard for their standalone players (sony, samsung, philips, aiwa...). The kiss ones support hacking etc, but not sure if the major brands like sony will so as far as compatibility for standalone players go, who knows. Like I said, it can all change. It's like avi vs others, sure there are other things you can use that are better, but as far as universal compliance and compatibility there isn't. Just like MP3s. Can name at least 3 other compression schemes that are better than MP3s but how many players are there for them? Not too many. In the future most likely, and that's when I'll switch.

@celtic_druid, what settings have you been using for DivX? and which version? As far as the blurring goes, you actually want a little bit of blurring (very minute level) so that the character outlines don't have that crappy dot thing going. I don't know if you watch anime, but if you look at One Piece by K-F or practically any other anime, you will notice a lot of tiny odd specks around black lines in general. It's nothing to really get all wined up about, but I don't like to have them. I notice those in all the XviD animes I have.
I must say though, the majority of the DivX encodings I have seen aren't good either lol (especially the fast motion scenes). I don't seem to have those same problems, but could just be how I do the encodings. The XviD encodings I did and other groups are with XviD-04102002-1 by Koepi and official 0.9.2.
As far as methods and settings go, I'm not going to give full scope of that (because I know some groups want to get mine but have been real pricks with me) but I did use same ones by P-A, HQA, Inf-AF-F, AonE.

PS
you have to use filters with DivX to get things to look right also (some of which include a filter to deinterlace properly, smoother, warp sharp, etc ). Also make sure psychovisual enhancement is unchecked and don't bother changing Preproc, QpEL & GMC & B-frames (these are old techniques I know people still do with the new DivX lol).
Anyhow, as I mentioned before, often there isn't too much of a difference, it's just what you like or don't like in something that can make a difference. Really I don't think one is better than the other (at least for now). Both have pros & cons. Some jump on 1 bandwagon, some on the other. I haven't seen noticeable enough differences to switch from one to the other, so until I see a huge gap between either, I think people should just stick with what they like to use and gives them the results they want.

then shadoe, try the latest xvid binaries available from nic or keopi
nic's : _http://nic.dnsalias.com/xvid.html
koepi: _http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtml
try the latest builds, though they're not labelled as stable ;)

moreover,u'll have more controls on the stuff u want 2 use in your encoding with xvid...it's more 4 "power users" ;)
started,has a debate on which best video codec 2 use :D :D

Actually I haven't really used DivX properly in a fair while. As far as standalones. DivX = MPEG4, XviD = MPEG4. Therefor if you are carefull what features you use with XviD then it will playback fine. Actually with the builds you have been using it doesn't matter, as basically all the advanced features are missing.

XviD devapi4 which will become v1.0 has profiles like DivX so you can easily make sure that you aren't using any settings that will ruin standalone compatibility.

Never encoded any anime in my life, but if you do then as I said, I suggest that you check out RV9, although I guess if you are encoding for standalones then that won't help.

Also I think in the future we will see standalone MP4 players.

@serjer
You're right, I was actually using Koepi's XviD-24062003-1 & not XviD-04102002-1.
I forgot I had installed that over XviD-04102002-1 because one of the anime groups suggested it to me for the "New Modulated HQ". The I-frame and P-frame quantizers were set to 2, 6; 2, 16. I guess I can fool around with those to see if I can get some better output.

@celtic_druid
I'll check out the RV9 in 2 weeks time when I start doing testings on DivX 5.1 also.
Deffinately there will be standalone MP4 players. I actually saw a miniature sized (4"x3" I think) in a show in Japan this past Feb/March. It was full color and in OLED screen, but they said they still had work to do with the OLED because apparently the white lighting in it only lasts some 25,000 hours (or roughly 2.5-3 years).
It wasn't great lol, but it did have nice feature of video out so you can hook it to a TV. Storage was something like 15-20Gigs.
Those shows are fun but it always leave you wanting stuff lol and they never tell you 100% when they will come out with the products. Apparently they were scheduled for this X-mas market, but I haven't been checking up on them (am broke lol).
Pricing was supposed to be $500USD+ I think. Pretty steep lol. I don't think they should cost more than say a gameboy advanced (or just a little more *lol I'm cheap).
