Preparing stuff for an AMAX (NAPA) DAV311 CD/MP3/VCD player

Compatible with VCD 1.0 / 2.0.

Anyone know if this device will tolerate non-standard tweaks like lowered data rate, or if it's happy with 90min media.

Secondly, whats the BEST DVD to VCD 1.0/2.0 ripper - that does NOT require massive disk space to file the media before encoding (though I recall one note that this way puts a lot of stress on the DVD-ROM - discs come out warm as it is!) - so perhaps bite the bullet and spring-clean the HD or add another

Cant help directly on the AMEX unit, but the best DVD to VCD is using DVD2AVI & TMPGEnc. Have a read of the Tutorial in the Movies Tutorial section.

Any thoughts on encoding from the drive? does it cook it?
CPU is a 1200 Athlon TB, but I guess I'm still looking at several times longer than realtime!

No probs with HD as long as its not confined or hard up against some other unit.

A 1.2g CPU is fine, you can do a VCD in 5-6 hours so just set up before you go to bed.
