Hi all, I'm wondering which type of drive y'all suggest. I want a dvd combo (+/-) drive, what is the best brand? Thanks.

pioneer 107, Thats what I'm waiting for. : ) They say it should be out in january. So lets hope.

How does the Optorite DD203 rate - seeing them at reasonable prices at computer fairs.

I like the idea of getting twice the capacity on CD-R (HD-Burn, only readable on the same drive ... or possibly on DVD-ROM if the firmware is updated for it), but wonder how good the media needs to be to pull it off.

Or the Liteon (buy many accounts, an exceptional CD burner with far wider media tolerance than their CD-RW drives - but limited on DVD media). Also, can the Liteon DVD do C1 error testing?

Cheaper drives, but you pay the price later ?

And a final point.... few +/- drives are equally good with both, so if you back +R for the future (certainly first to hit 8x), your preference may be different to "-R media is cheaper, but the drive needs to be unfussy".

Some drives major in plus, some in minus, while some are ok with most media not regarded as poor.

Yes Optorite drive's are very good by all accounts also MSI MS-8404A which are the same drives..By the way a firmware up has fixed issues from the 1st fimeware where these drives would burn to disk but not able to read the data on there... :)

Well, a tale from one of the traders at my local fair, is that someone bought an Optorite DD203 from one of the others there - and emailed Optorite when they had problems with media (and then they ended up getting the drive swapped by the trader) - and then Optorite were asking for samples of the problematic media so they could test and tune for it.

The tale does not relate if they offered to PAY for the samples though - or perhaps replace them with suitable media.

Yes I think my 411S can do C1 error testing... Never had any problems with DVD media so far-but I always try to play it safe and try to go with Ritek (g04 ?)media.. ;)
(As for the suggestion of which DVD burner to choose..? The 411S has been OK so far for the price..but we all know what my ideal choice would be-hmm..that`s a difficult question... ;) :D )
