Please help! need help with DVD burning

I am new, i have no idea, well not much anyway, about how to create dvd or vcds. I have downloaded a few movies that i would like to put on disc to play on my dvd player. I am not sure how to do this. I need to know what sort of files can be copied on to disc also what programs i can use and also what sort of cds/dvd?
