please help; computer reboots by itself

ok, i'm on win2k; primary HD has 2 partitions; 1 gig of ddr ram; after i changed some of the services according to some guides on some tech websites, and took out a slower HD to replace with a bigger and faster HD

when i reboot, it shows post ok, shows the correct number of RAM, gets to the windows 2000 screen, and then i hear a click and then it reboots itself; i'm able to get to boot in safemode with networking but the ip address went from 192.168.1.100 to 165.xxx.xxx and of course i can't see the lan and internet; everythign takes really long to do anything in safemode; n i notice the services.exe has consumes high memory and the cpu usage is constantly on 100%

this is what i have done to try to fix it so far

1/ i looked at the services on the working computer and try to change them to those on the working computer

2/ i unhooked all the ultra ata pci devices from the card

3/ i did an ipconfig /all and it did show 165.xxx so i did ipconfig /renew ; it paused for a while and said it couldnt find the dhcp server or something like that

4/ i took out the primary HD and slaved it on a working computer and did a chkdsk on both partitions; the primary (C) has no errors; the secondary found a bunch of errors (but there are no programs there, just data) n there was no bad sector or anything like that. but the HD is really hot (brand new maxtor 250G)

so since the primary partition has no error and that i can boot into safemode, what can the problem be? is it RAM (even tho it reads correct amount of RAM in POST), cpu fan, psu, or motherboard?

I am stumped

since i 'm slaving it to the working computer; should i ghost that primary partition to another HD? i have never used ghost before even tho i have it; the one in trouble has drive image, not ghost but the working computer has norton ghost

Thanks duracell for responding; i really appreciate your help

i dont think mine is related to the problem in that thread tho; i thought it might have been the ram since i kinda accidentally sprayed the air duster near it and might have damaged it (but it shows all of the 1gig minus shared video memory during post tho);also, in trying to clean out the dust, i used the paintbrush and kinda pushed around the cpu fan to dislodge the dust so that might be the cause too; i just went and bought a 600watt psu just in case it might be the psu going bad; plus,, i need a bigger psu for that compuer anyway

i'll post back after i figur out how to install it; my other computer's case and 600W psu came as well but i have yet to install it; have to read up on how to do it properly; believe it or not, this time last year, i didnt even know how to crack open the case n i dont have any friends that know about this to show me; i just recently got more brave and thanks to the kindness of you guys' expertise helping me out in diff. tech boards, i'm getting more comfortable

so i just want to thank u all who tried to help me; it's very much appreciated :)

what i tried to say by posting the link above is, that i think your reboot is a hidden BSOD (driver or service related); by booting in safe mode and disabling "Automatic Restart" you have the chance to read the BSOD message next time instead of a reboot; You don't think it's a hidden BSOD? :eek: Are you the technican or is it me? :D
and if you think your RAM ist the problem, the same link above may help you too (Prime95);

Fan is spinning while booting? if not it's a failure is guaranteed;

hi duracell, sorry if i offended u ehheh; didnt mean to ; yeah, i knew about the disabling reboot to read bsod but dont know why i chose to not do it that day even tho i did remember to export the list of events in apps and system event viewer ; clouded by total despair i guess :) and yes the case fans n cpu fan was spinning but the back of the case was really hot air coming out; and in safe mode, it was extremely sluggish n hanging but when i put a fan blowing next to it, it seems to speed up a little. I am deducing that it mgiht be the fan in the psu going bad
but regardless, i need to put a new psu in there anyway b/c it needs it; i bought that yesterday along with a hd cooler type that looks like 3.5-5.25 HD mounter; that looks promising

oh, and thanks a lot for that chieftec visual links!! u dont believe that the chieftec case that i bought had no manual on it or the psu at all!! i guess it's oem version (which i wasn't aware of from their advertisement); may be they assume that if u buy a case and psu, then u r a tech n thus dont need a manual; i still think that assumption is way too presumptuous; that's why your illustrated link wll be of great help to me

OK, i installed the new psu 600W and tried to reboot but same thing; it goes through bios fine until win2k is loaded, so i booted in safe mode and disable rebooting from error and here's what's on the bsod

i'm sure there r lots of resources on this as well so i will do my research but if you know somethign, please feel free to post; i didnt add any programs or hardware to it before the crash;i remember i only did some changes to the different services according to a guide
