Hi people, im new to this site and would be very gratefull for any help on this most annoying problem....my system is as follows

Athlon xp 2100+
Terretec 6fire 24/96
Gforce4
80Gb space
512 Ram
CD/DVD

The problem is this when i insert an audio or dvd into to drive to play from the drive itself i get what can only be descirbed as digital clipping noises and it stutters visually. Everything plays fine if i play it from the hard drive its just when playing media from cd. Bearing in mind ive just done a complete re-install and being quite new to the pc world could have not set something up right. I use cubase alot and very rarely i get clipping sounds from there too.

I dont seem to be able to play DVD's at all without some major playback errors visually and sonically, and before the reinstall it worked fine.

Please help as ive just forked out on new hardware only for it not to work! aaagh (poor student see!!! lol)

Thanks very much for your time :(

Hi fozzy777, Welcome to our forum!

Did you installed the proper chipset driver package? download is available at your motherboard/PC fabricator's homepage;

and check if DMA is enabled for all drives (HDDs and CD/DVD):
(if W2k/XP) Windows' Device Manager > right click at each IDE channel > Properties > choose DMA; reboot

Knightmare! lol

Hi duracell thanks very much for the introduction and reply :)

Ive tried your wise words and it has been to no avail, somethings telling me its an audio problem but surely it just wouldnt happen off CD drive alone would it?

Thanks for your help, anyone else have any ideas?

(digital clipping sounds when playing back from CD/DVD drive..)

do all DVDs have this problem or just the one ?!

if its an AUDIO problem then check it with an AUDIO CD this will tell you if the audio is broken :)

have you tried a VCD/SVCD to see if it has the same problem !?

does the player you are using have a HARDWARE Acceleration tab !? this must be checked to get optimal playback :)

You MAY also want to run DIRECT X diagnostics and check under sound that you have HARDWARE Acceleration for sound enabled or set to maximum .. or alternativly if this is full try reducing it one step at a time and see if this resolves it :)

access direct x diagnostics from the run bar in the start menu by typing dxdiag to run dx diagnostic control panel :)

Also try a few more dvds and some svcds and an audio cd and let us know your results :)

if all else fails can you test the drive in a friends system !?

its quite possible the drive may or maynot be broken ?! :(

I cant thank you enough for your quick and good diagnostic's, they were all suggestions that i had never heard of, and all the time im learning.

But still to no avail! ive even tried moving the soundcard to a different slot, and uninstalling the secondary IDE, and forcing DMA.

it seems to play audio cd's alot better, but dvd is just a stuttering mess of slow down but mostly digital clips. the thing is that before my re-install it worked fine so its not a hardware conflict cos my setup easily runs dvds, it it used to.

Its just such a strange problem!!! :(

Please, any more suggestions would be great, thanks already for your time

have you enabled DMA for all ide devices for ALL hard drives and cdroms burners etc basically any device thats connected to an ide cable !?

What new hardware did you install? Make sure you have the latest drivers. Sometimes the ones that come with the hardware are updated due to unforseen conflicts with other hardware.

What OS are you running?

Do you have an add-in hard drive controller? You may have to manually install the drivers for it. Again, make sure you have the latest version.

Do you have a lot of tasks running in the background? Some tasks that get added when you install software (Windows media player, real player, adobe reader, quicktime, office, ...) can be a real drain. Especialy if there is a lot of them. Disabling the startups in Windows config should help. If your not sure what a program does, go to google and enter the program name. Chances are you will find out what it does.

Have you checked the device manager tab? There shouldn't be any "!" or other symbols next to your devices. If you do, its a sign that device is having a problem.

Did you install Windows Media player when you reinstalled? The latest version likes to access the internet a lot for codec updates, disk info, sends unique player ID, sends player usage data and retrieving missing data (all that for free). If its your default player, this may be some of your problem. These "features" can be shut off in the tools/options menu.
