Please freeze my PC

Hi - this is my first post here: mainly because I haven't yet activated - or, more to the point, sought to activate - this interesting new utility . . .

. . . why? - well, I test hardware, & I'm really concerned this main system here changes its hardware configuration enough that MalcomX will get fed up with the [potentially weekly] requests for new codes.

It's basically always a dual-CPU box using the same mobo/memory [pairs of CPU's change once every couple of months or so] with a couple of SCSI RAID-hosts with pretty longterm hardware constituents of/ID's to the arrays ; but the detailed configuration varies - has to vary - a lot: optical devices vary in number from 4 upwards - usually about a half-dozen, mostly SCSI on a fixed HBA. Only non-SCSI storage device is/are DVD-burner.

So; please might I ask for a very rough guideline [I know this has been done before, with AFAICS not much joy] on what I components I should try to fix for a few months so as to avoid always having to mail, then wait some variable & possibly frustrating time for a code?

- have done searches here to try to ensure this post isn't just a satisfactorily-answered repeat -

Mack is a nice guy,he will mail you a new code if you need 1....
AFAIK:as long as you don't format or reinstall windows, you don't need another code..:)

Recently I did some major re-vamping of my PCs. As long as the Motherboard, CPU and OS were untouched, key was working. On one,I did a fresh installment of XP SP1 and it still worked. Or maybe I was lucky?
MX is a nice guy, and he tries to be helpful. On the other hand, menuedit that has a similar key system gives only 5 per year max but will allow more if needed and u get in touch.
But 99% won't need more than 5 anyway.

I'm also afraid you will run into more problems. Set the PC(s) so DS and Ifoedit use only one CPU. Search for Dual CPUs (or similar)

I am curious though: Why set DS on an ever changing machine?
If I was you, I would keep a DVD-Backup dedicated PC, made out of spare parts.
Mainly, that's what I have done.

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

as roadworker says as long as you keep the OS then things should be OK on most occasions. Swapping certain components may not affect the ID yet some will and different people get different results

people can reinstall windows and still use the same ID key, yet some can't. I guess it's the way people reinstall windows that affects whether they can use the same key again as they may be using different Windows Keys/usernames etc

I have given out replacement keys to people as long as they supply info I ask for. I don't think it's a frustrating process to wait as long as people read the FAQ info that is available. It tells you exactly what is required so the process is made faster ;)

even now I still get emails with just a name and ID when people first ask for the key, yet most who do actually fully read the email will laugh at it as I cannot make it more clear and colourful than what it is can I?

as long as I don't think people are abusing it then I'm fine with suppling new keys as I keep records and I can sometimes spot the abusers ;)

MackemX - thanks - yes, the OS & likely the partition on the boot-array will be constants - this sort of system is 24/7 bar when being pulled to bits & an install lasts for years.

arianos - Hi - yes, I know - but this box is running a background CCE encode most of the time [which, of course, is more-or-less-bar-the-frameserver-multi-threaded].
