Does anyone know if the Pikaone Internal DVD writer is any good? I was thinking about getting one, and it is priced at £80 which seems very cheap...!

Or is there a better one to get at a similar price?

Thanks for your help.

Are you saying...?

Thanks for your v quick response, LTR12101B, but in a nutshell are you saying that you think the Pioneer 106 is probably better?

Oh, and what's OEM?
peter4000 originally OEM was an adjective used to describe a company that produced hardware to be marketed under another company's brand also in some cases you don't get software or the full retail software as if you got the full retail vesion. The Pioneer A06 is a very stable DVD Burner I would say go for the A06 miself but thats mi... :) By the way the other drvie has had good reports too.
OEM Burner in this case is just the burner it self (most of the time)

Sorry..OEM = original equipment manufacturer

Good description:

RETAIL BOXED = you get the drive, software (bundle version, may be restricted/inferior options compared to retail of the same software), maybe one piece of sample media, maybe a decent printed manual, maybe a fitting kit of screws and audio cable.

OEM drives, you have to check, these are as supplied to system builders, brown boxed or just antistatic bagged, and do not neccessarily include any of the above unless actually stated.

If you want an OEM drive with software, make sure it says (or they confirm) that bundle software IS supplied with it.

There can be other differences - the OEM drives are sometimes named differently - particularly in the case of the SONY DVD writers, and use different firmware that may or may not have the same updates and capabilities.

Thanks for everyone's help...

Thank you for all your replies.

I decided to go with the established Pioneer A06, which today arrived from www.planetmicro.co.uk (only a day after I placed the order!) for £105 incl VAT and P&P which seemed a pretty good price to me!

Not installed it yet though, will do so on weekend. If I get any questions (and with my computer skills, I know there'll be lots), I'll be sure to post them here which seems a pretty comprehensive forum.

Regards.
:)
