Picture Quality Problem after Compression, help?

I have a problem I would love help with. I ripped a purchased pre recorded disc DVD, released last year.

It is about (~8 gig). I used both DVD2oneX and Popcorn.

I compressed with both programs down to 4.1gig.
No matter what I do, the results are:
The playback appears to almost do a A/B between a:
clear/not so clear (pixelated) picture, changing every 3-4 seconds.

It only happens after trying to compress this one program. Others work fine so far. I have tried different media, record speeds, etc. on this DVD with the issue but no change.

Ideas?

TIA

The size of that dvd is really big......maybe to big to get good results with a recoder like Dvd2OneX.....
Did you strip out every extra stuff and only recoded the main movie??
Since you're on a MAC,I can't recommend a program like Cinema Craft Encoder to do the job and I don't know if there's 1 for MAC.....maybe Mainconcepts Mac Mpeg Encoder?

May I suggest DVD Shrink? I have used it with VERY Good results.

I was able to fit the first two Harry Potter Movies (movie only for both, but still 6 hours of film) and they have very good quality.

The key is to use custom compression and set the extras to the maximum compression you can stand. Sometimes you need a second compression to get all the way down to 4.1 GB, but it does the best job I've found.

You can also set custom compressions for specific portions of the movie. First select the overall movie, set it's compression. Then select the specific areas to compress further (such as low motion, low detail scenes). I haven't used that feature in several months, but I am pretty sure there is a guide on Doom9 on setting custom shrink ratios.

Good luck!
Mike
