Perfectdisk defrag

Hi folks :)

I was using o&o defrag, but find that Perfectdisk's offline defrag works much better, so i unistalled o&o, rebooted & then installed Perfectdisk & then updated it, only prob is when i try to preform a offline defrag, it asks me to reboot, i reboot, but XP stalls on the boot screen, the HD access light is on, but no noise from drive & the little progress bar on boot screen just keeps moving, when i reset it, it loads ok, but when it gets to the defrag bit, the screen just disappears & then it loads the desktop :confused:

I aint got a clue as to why it not doing it right, hope U fine folk can help :)

When performing an offline defrag make sure you have turned the bios virus protection off.
Anyway, you must have some error log at your event manager about the issue.

Cheers scarcrow :)

I always have the bios virus check turned off, unistalled & went back to o&o, but will unistall that & reinstall perfectdisk & see if it leaves a error message in the event manager, if it does will post back :)

Ok, writing this on a rleations PC as i looking at a box for them :)

Installed perfectdisk & then the update, chose a offline defrag (systemfiles & pagefiles), asks me if i want to schedule one for next reboot, click yes & then reboot, pc reboots & then XP bootscreen appears (now before the boot screen takes about 30-40 secs to vanish, but when i try a offline defrag, it flashes the keyboard lights after 10 secs & then activates me optical mouse) then it just sits there on the boot screen, its almost as if it is activating other drivers or services sooner than they normally are, here are some of the messages from the event viewer, last first

Service started

Service started

Product: PerfectDisk -- Installation operation completed successfully.

then i get some that must be from last time i tried it

Although this says Norman AV, its the same message that perfectdisk had, but cant find it now, so substitue Perfectdisk for Norman

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( NormanNPT ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Norman Message [2004/05/22

I didnt have any probs using it last time before i had to format, does it need any other services to run as i have a lot of the useless ones disabled

The PDEngine service is set to manual & the PDSched service is set to auto, not changed from install

It still foing the same, just tried another offline defrag & again the bootscreen is up for 10 secs then keyboard lights flash & then optical mouse light comes on, as soon as that happens the HD stops being read from & i have to reset, then chose start windows nornally & after the boot screen i get the Pefectdisk screen, a few secs sfter that it goes black then loads the desktop :(

Ummm, did you really had Norman Antivirus installed at some time? Seems to have created a small mess. Remove PD and Norman (if present), run a registry cleaner, reboot and then try your luck again.

Cheers scarecrow :)

I had installed perfectdisk & had this prob before Normans was installed, didnt like normans much so it was unistalled & i did clean the reg, the reason i posted the Norman message was the perfectdisk message was the same (just said perfectdisk instead of norman)

Will try it yet again & see what happens :)

Also do a chkdisk. Have had this problem with both o&o and perfectdisk, never really got to know what was wrong though, but a reg cleaning and reinstall usually sorted it :)
Good luck bud :)

Hi :)

Well i removed it & then cleaned the registry with tuneup's reg cleaner & also with RegSupreme, also checked for any leftovers from o&o defrag, but didnt find any, ran a chkdisk on thourogh & then reinstalled raxco & then the update, the inline defrag works fine, but the offline still has the same prob, if i could find out how to get o&o to do a Complete/Access offline defrag, but everytime i have tried it, it just does a stealth defrag on it :(

i don't know about the latest, because i'm still a v4 fan; in v4:
- you have to plan a new Defrag Job e.g. 10 min in future,
- choose Complete/Access mode for the job,
- select shut down after defrag,
- close OOD,
- reboot,
- don't log in, just wait or go to bed;

how to plan a new Defrag Job should be mentioned in the help file;

I back to using o&o now, have tried it the way U posted before, but all it does is defrag in windows, then reboots & does a stealth defrag :(

What i want it to do is do the defrag offline (ie before windows loads & locks files)so it can do the MFT & System areas :)

O&O's Offline Defragmentation doesn't mean Boot Time Defragmentation;
Offline Defragmentation = Windows is loaded but no user is logged in;
Boot Time Defragmentation = defragments files wile booting before loading non kernel mode services/drivers and before loading the GUI;

O&O uses the Boot Time Defragmentation only for defragmenting previously locked files, not for a complete defragmentation;

my scenario above does the "Complete Job" as Offline Defragmentation and deals with the leftover fragments next time wile booting; there is no other way with O&O;

Ahh i didnt know that, i thought it was similar to Perfectdisk's offline mode, dont know if Ur suggestion would work on my box, i the only user, so it set to load up instead of ask for username :(

Appreciated m8 :)
