Hi.
I hope any one here can help me.
I have an ASUS CRW 5224A since two months.

The drive used to work fine. But few days ago, I´ve burned a CD and after that, the computer suddenly shutted down.

Now, when I insert a CD into the drive, PC suddenly shuts down. It also suddenly shuts down when I try to open the properties of the drive (click right button on the drive and then click on Properties).
If I open Ahead Nero (the bundled version that came with the drive) and select to burn DATA CD it shuts down too.

But, it´s strange, because if i had inserted a CD in the drive and then the computer is rebooted (or suddenly shutted down), after reboot, I can normally browse the CD. But still cant burn CDs.

I have Win98 SE,
PIII 800,
128 RAM,
MotherBoard ASUS P3V133
SB Live mp3+
CD-rom Drive
2 HD
Viper II

PD: ¿could it be a power supply problem? I have to add a "bifurcator" (dont know the word in english, but it´s a calbe that duplicates a cable power supply) so i could connect both CD ROM and CD-RW. But i´m using it before the problem starts happening

Please, I need yout help. Thanks in advance

I have disconnected the CD ROM power supply cable and the problem seems to be fixed.
Now, the computers do not suddenly shut down when trying to use Nero or viewing the Properties of the drive...

but now i want to know why that was the solution (to disconnect the CD-rom) because my PC and my CD-RW used to work fine with the CD-ROM also connected.

The problem starts suddenly after copying a CD few days ago.

¿Could it be the use of a bifurcation cable in the power supply?
I have being using it during two months and i hadnt any problem...

¿A soft problem? I thought it was fault of Nero Express 5.5, but it doest seem to.

I dont use Clone CD nor other burn software. I just have the bundled version of Nero.

Well, thanks to everyone that have helped me in this forum.

ASUS support sucks!!! I have sent them a few mails and I´ve never got an answer..

To see if that really was the problem you need to connect it back the way it was and see if it does the same thing. As to why that would correct the problem??? I would suggest that maybe your power supply is giving you one of those rare warnings that it's about to give up the ghost. And the modification is enough to push it over the limit.

Often this probleem disappear when you remove drivers like udf/incd/etc.
So if you use this or have install these remove and try then.

Sorry if my writing of engels not so good, i can read it and speak but writing is a other thing.

That's because your registration serial is not terribly good...

Packet writing software can exhibit this behaviour.Stomp DLA,Direct Cd,Instant Write,InCd.,etc. ;)

Did you ever find out the true problem? Mine is doing the exact same thing. I put a CD in once that I burned in another computer, and the computer just shut down. Now every time I place a CD in that drive, it shuts down. I need that drive to copy CD's when necessary, or to read files since my burner is not as efficient in doing so. I have no idea what caused it, and how to fix it besides unplugging it, which wouldn't make a difference since I need it. It shuts down when I place a CD in the drive. I haven't tried looking at the properties to see if that would cause it to shut down. Also, after it shuts down, I have to restart it several times before it reboots completely. It keeps shutting down each time I try to restart it, and I have to power off, then on, then press the restart button. I would really appreciate your help. My email is lollipopluv@email.com

Thank you!

Hi & Welcome to our forum! :cool:

for me it looks like your power supply does not provide enough strength;
try to lend a quality power supply from a friend to test it in your PC before buying a new one;
