PC Keeps Freezing!?

After many formats and testing things out I only have 2 options left, motherboard or RAM.

I have tried a different hard drive...still freezes.

I have 3 CD Roms in the machine and I've tried unplugging them one at a time incase of a knackered drive....still freezes each time.

It happens at random times, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. Usually when I use Instant Copy...I don't think it's the software though because I used it trouble free for weeks before my problems started. It has also happened when the machine is just stationary on the desktop, or when other apps are running.

I have 2 x 512 of RAM in and I'm testing them out now, I took one out and I'm waiting to see if it's gonna freeze on me again!

Any thoughts on this one? motherboard?

Cheers.

Could be like U say & be bad ram

I would test the PC constantly 4 a week with 1 ram module at a time

What is Ur setup, do U have HD & CDrom on master IDE channel & 2 other CDroms on secondery?

If the Pc was workin ok up 2 now, what changes or s/w have U installed since?

What OS U using?

When testin the memory also try it in the other slot/s 2 see if it a dodgy slot

Lets us know how U get on:)

Are you sure the cpu is not running too hot?Usually overheating is the main culprit for freeze ups.;)

Heavy tasking, such as encoding,or transcoding will almost always cause freezeups with a borderline system(cooling problem).

Freezing is almost always heat related, software conflicts, or bad hardware device. Like raid or scsi controlloer cards. Could be a driver conflict. Need more specific info to offer advice.

have you had pc long time?
I know my Mb will only support UP to 512 and manual states that pc may freeze if too much ram is applied. but this is probally not your prob. sounds like heat (maybe your overclocked without suffient cooling)
Have you been into the device manager to see if you have double entries or conflicts there?
good luck

Thanks for the replies, I'm still testing memory, took out 1 x 512 last night and so far no freezes...we'll see.

I don't think it's a heating problem cause it can happen 10 mins into the PCs use, as well as if it's been on a few hours.

I've had the same set up (hardware wise) for months....

Primary master - hard drive
Primary slave - DVD writer
Secondary master - CD writer
Secondary slave - DVD reader

Also had the same cards in for months too. No new memory either.

I use Windows XP pro.

At first I thought it may have been software that I had installed the week the freezing started, but I've since formatted and the freezing continued without me putting the programmes back on.

Thanks guys.

Let's just hope it a dodgy memory nodule & nothin more serious

U prob tried this, but check all the cards & me & seated correctly:)

what are you testing with?
I use Mem Test 86 3.0 usually within minutes it will show weather there is bad ram or not.

you can get Mem Test freeware GNU/GPL (for all you anti-warez peps)
http://www.memtest86.com/
D/l pre compiled for install by windows UNLESS your running a linux box, then you should know what to do.
