pc freezes

in the last few weeks my pc often freezed completely (i had to reset) when i played any kind of movie (mpg, avi (divx), svcd ...) sometimes during the playback, sometimes just at the beginning, sometimes at the end. i first used some single codecs, then i installed nimo and at the moment i use acemcp. i use the newest mb (asus k7v with via kx133) drivers (4in1 4.40(a)P3.zip) directx 8.1b and the latest detonators (29.80) for my elsa erazor x, but i had the problem already with different drivers
my os is win2k SP3 RC3.140 but i remember having this problem already before using the beta SP3
any ideas why this happens or how i could solve it (not format) ?

One of the biggest issues is the KT 133 mobo. It is highly regarded as one of the worst ever made (the chipset that is).
On the other hand it is more likely a driver issue with video card or something that handles video playback on your machine.
Most logical step is perhaps formatting & reinstalling everything clean. I would not use the detonator 29.80 yet, as it hasn't been fully tested. Try going back to 28.32 (which works pretty stable).
Also what are the other specs of your PC?
As in HDD, Memory (& amount), other controlers, & especially PSU?

you didn't read carefully: it isn't the kt133, it is the much better version for the slot A Athlons released before: the KX133 !
i've never read any big probs with that chip.
hdd is a 20 GB Maxtor 92041U4. no raid or scsi controler. 2x 128 MB SDRAM (both noname, but one expensive with ECC and CL2 the other is a cheap one one, only CL3 (perhaps on big prob of this machine))
then i have a dlink 530TX network card, yamaha crw3200, terratec DMX 6fire 24/96, a onboard AC97 sound chip. elsa erazor x is a geforce 256 with 32 MB SDRAM.
i had the prob wit the WHQL tested detonators 29.40 already
i will try the 28.32 ...
btw: what does PSU mean ?

I have had similar problems, try changing your hardware acceleration settings in Control Panel/ System/ Performance/ Graphics...

you are using win98se ? or whatever but not win2k.
the hardware graphics acceleration slider doesn't exist where you said it should be, on my system

My simple thinking

Hardware versions is over me but keywords is LAST FEW WEEKS freezes and IN THE PAST.

DirectX8.1b.

I had my systwm totally go bad after installing new software and all the stuff with the DVD ROM drive.

My simpler guess is DirectX incompatability with SOMETHING. Running movies is the FREEZE UP.

My wondering as what to use in a new system as compatable with MS. Maybe MS has updates for windows 2K to go WITH DirectX8.1b.

My first Athlon mobo was the Asus K7V as you have. I was running a 650 MHz CPU then. But in those days I was running WinME and it was as stable as a rock, one of the best boards/setups I ever owned. So basically all I'm saying is it is possible to have a stable system with that mobo, suggest you try the suggestions as above.

just found out it was one bios setting called AGP Fast Write, i switched that off and everything is back to normal now, seems that my graphics card doesn't support that
