PAR files

I usually rely on IRC and FTP sites but I found a program on a newsgroup the other day that I wanted so I picked it up. But it has these PAR files in addition to the RAR files and I'm not sure what to do with the PAR files. Are they some kind of a patch to the original RAR files?

I did some searching and found a PAR program that is v2.00 and it didn't seem to like these files and said something about using an earlier version - like v1.56 or earlier. I haven't been able to find that. Anyone here have it or have a link to get it?

Then, the question is, what are these files and what do I do with them?
