OptoRite DD0401 problem

Hi all - I've just bought one of these drives and reckon the design is defective. Here's some background, and if anyone knows of a solution then I'd be delighted to hear about it, 'cos otherwise the drive's going back.

I've got 2 PCs - both Gigabyte motherboards (1 multi-processor Athlon MP, 1 single-processor Athlon) and both run Win2K Pro - SP4. The burner, by default, is configured as a region 1 drive and I'm in the UK, so I want to set it as Region 2. Device Manager > Advanced properties tells me that 4 more changes are allowed, and lets me select the UK from the country list. Press Ok, the dialog closes, there's no error message, but the change is not retained. I've had the drive as both a master and a slave device, in both machines but no success. I've flashed the firmware with the official update from the OptoRite site and it makes no difference.

Anybody got similar experiences and/or solutions ? I don't want to change my OS - it's very stable and works well - so is the only solution returning the drive and getting another one ?

check to see if ur drive has a region-free firmware at the firmware page.
Thanks for the reply, I had checked anyway - but I'm reluctant to mess around with the firmware with anything other than official updates in case it's screwed even more. 'Cos then I'll be obliged to keep the drive rather than get my money back or get a substitute drive. I was mainly wondering whether there was some trick to setting the region other than the obvious method
