for NSTC tapes you need a NSTC capable VCR;
otherwise there is no way to get a colored picture, because the PAL VCR cannot pick out NSTC color informations;

If the video is equipped to play NTSC to "PAL", then your input would need to support a PAL subcarrier - as I understand it, NTSC play on a suitable PAL machine, puts out NTSC frame and line rate, with a PAL colour subcarrier - a compromise which some PAL TV's will accept, if they can sync to the frame rate (the line rate is actually similar).

If that's the video you have, then you'd need to set the capture card tu use PAL, if it can be changed - otherwise you need a native NTSC video, or one which is fully dual standard.

nstc vhs to pal dvd

Yes

I do get colour leaving the dc10 card on PAL setting
Unfortunately i get an extended display in height with the bottom quarter of the display giving a gobbledegook (what a fantastic word) output

Is there a way to 'cut' this bottom section off.

regards :confused: :eek:

If it has custom settings, go for 525 lines and PAL.
If you are getting all the picture you DO need, then you may be able to crop it down when you encode. Unless you can get hold of a real NTSC player, it looks like the only option.

TMPEGENC (PLUS for DVD) would probably do it (MPEG2 features are 30 day trial/buy, so experiment with VCD standard on the free version, before beginning the trial of plus) - a captured VHS is nowhere near full DVD quality anyway.
