Norton AV 2004 Killer

I was all praises for this prog, after all, when I first installed it, it detected 4 viruses, all successfully delt with!

But However, and a BIG BUT, I was puzzled to see a few hundred files in the protected recycle bin that I hadn't deleted but were apparently there as protected files.

Being a busy mother, I didn't have time to look around for the manual for an explanation to this, so a quick type into google took me to a forum which explained it and to answer someone else's query, it was safe to remove these files. After all, Norton is set to purge these files anyway after 7 days.

Now here's the BUT......As a result of clearing these files, we now have a lot of progs and games that don't work.......God knows how Windows as been affected. Only time will tell.

Surely, Norton should warn you how seriously this could affect your system!

Just a warning to others.

Personally i don't have to worry... haven't used Norton's ugly crapware for ages. First F-Secure, then NOD32 and last (almost two years ago...) Avast! 4 did the virus cleaning dirty job more than decently, and certainly way better than any Nortoncrap i've ever used...

yeah same here, last used Nortons2002 about a year ago & it was mising things left right & centre as well as seriously slowing system down, 03/04 versions are even more resource hungry.I do still use norton utils mainly just 4 speeddisk, but never had any probs with the protected bin as i always disable it right away, now use both NOD & Avast & although NOD is quicker at scanning, Avast is much better prog :)

Thank you for the alternatives :) I need to protect another PC, so i will certainly consider one.
Protected cycle bin is now disabled, and now determining what software needs re-installing.
Windows XP seems to be OK at the mo, but if necessary can I replace any missing windows files from my recovery CD?

Thanx :)

I changed NAV 2004 for NOD32 one month ago. NOD32 is not resource hungry like NAV and the detection rate is very good. But it is not perfect, it has its quircks, visit the Wilder's forum and take a look, the official NOD32 forum is located there.
I have never had any problem with Norton recycle Bin in the 4 years that I was using their AV. Now that I have killed Norton I have found a very nice product that manages your deleted files, it is Undelete Professional from Executive Soft, the same guys of Diskeeper. Take a look at it, it is a very robust app compared with NAV unerase. The only BUT with it is that it doesn't show you what process or program has deleted the files. But it has much more features than NAV Unerase.

you can uninstall AdvTools
this way:

C:\WINDOWS\IsUninst.exe -f"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\AdvTools\Uninst.isu" -c"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\AdvTools\ADVINST.DLL" -y -a -x

just copy and paste the line above, and run it

-> Protected Recycle Bin is now removed ;)

Think I'm on top of the situation now. My most used progs seem to be running ok, although a couple of times I've rebooted and windows as reported to have recovered from a serious error ????

Thanks for the options on recovering files. I have two here; Ontrack Easy Recovery (runs from floppy) and Recover4all Professional. Trouble is, there's that much deleted stuff, it's difficult to sort out good from bad. A lot of .ini files show up, but I think it's just as easy to reinstall the affected progs.

Not sure about the recovery disc, most of them seem to just do a complete wipe & reinstall it as factory standard, so U might lose everything ^ end up with a clean install of XP, wait for more advice :)

M:) If your system is badly screwed up then the best is a fresh reinstall. You have only some recovery disk that came with the computer? Then you should back up all your data (docs, savegames, etc) and put that disk there an let it do its job. After run the apropiate Windows updates and reinstall your software, after this you can put back your docs, saved games, etc. And as a last recommendation: When everything is working as you like MAKE A GHOST IMAGE of your OS and programs partition. This can really save you all this problems pal.
I wish you the best luck.

well, touch wood, system seems ok and stable at the mo, so I'll Persevere.

If things don't work out, I do have a back up created with 'Power Quest Drive Image' but I may have resized my partition since then and not sure how this would affect the restoration?

Thanx
