Hi, I just burned my first dvd this morning :)

I burned a bunch of 400mb mpeg1 files to a couple of datasafe 4x dvd -r with ritek 04 dye.
I used nero 6 for the burn, and it seemed to do the job fine.
Outwardly the dvd seems fine, it shows up in my computer and the files are all there.
When i try and playback the video clips from the dvd drive however, the video and sound are very choppy. Also when i try to copy one of the 400mb files off the dvd it says it'll take about 60min to copy!
I've tried enabling dma on both the primary and secondary ide channels to no effect. I made sure that hardware excelaration is full, and I turned the machine on and off with the same results. I tried putting a cd from a magazine in the drive and copied a 200mb file in a couple of minutes (as you'd expect)

The drive is a pioneer dvr 106 and i also got the latest firmware from pioneers site. ohh and i'm using windows xp

Can anyone help me please!

Thanks a lot

Sounds like bad media is giving you reading fits. I'd try a different batch of blanks.
looks like you might be right, as I just put in a dvd film to see if a file would copy off that ok, and it did.
So does this mean that I'm going to have to throw away the disks I just bought? The reason I got them was because ones with the ritek dye were supposed to be among the most reliable.
These are the ones I bought

Any suggestions as to any way to salvage these disks, or a recommendation for a new type?

Thanks again.

Also you could check for generall crc errors with this.
:)
hmmm strange, I tried burning another disk there at only 1x speed, containing only one 400mb file and didn't finalize it. It worked perfect.
Another strange thing while running cd check, it's reading the dodgy disk at 3,500kb/s, but the whole problem was that the drive wouldn't read it fast enough when I wanted to watch or copy a file. I'm totally puzzled as to why this is happening.

Help please!

Try burning them at 2X and finalizing. If that works, I'd chalk it up to experience and use them up that way. I don't have a Pioneer, though I know they are supposed to work well with Riteks. It could just be a flaky batch of Riteks, or it could be your drive. For DVD-R's, I tend to like OptoDisc, but that's just a personal preference.

Ritek G04 should work fine @ 4x could be a bad batch or perhaps its Nero Playing up try burning with another proggy I use RecordNowMax

@ sheavy,

You might want to try one of disk info reader software utility programs like DVD Info Pro that are available to insure that your disks are actually Ritek G04 DVD disk. These software utility programs will read the info on the disk and display the media information and provide the media code and manufacture ID. There are a lot of unscrupulous dealers around attempting to pass off inferior media.

I have been using Ritek G03 DVD disks on my Pioneer DVR-105 and haven't had any problems. Ritek DVD disk work great with the Pioneer DVD burners.

I don't want to start a flaming war about Nero but it has been know to cause problems with DVD burning. I use Padus DiscJuggler for all my DVD burring and have not had any problems.
