No sound

This is the message GSpot produces for some files I have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
DirectShow partially succeeded to play file. The actual text of the error or warning is:
0x00040242: VFW_S_PARTIAL_RENDER - Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format.

The following combination of filters were used:

{C:\Documents and Sett..-..- S3E03 - Speed 3.avi} (Video Source)
{AVI Splitter} (Video Splitter)
{DivX Decoder Filter} (Video Decoder)
{Video Renderer} (Video Renderer)

Special Note: GSpot determined this audio should play, yet it didn't, and the format code is 0x160 or 0x161. This combination of conditions is a likely indicator that the Microsoft WMA codec is attempting to play DivX 3 audio, or vice versa - an unfortunate result of original DivX designers' neglect to use a distinct format code. The ability to play this audio may be dependent on the installation or uninstallation of at least the audio portion of the DivX 3.11 codec. This codec may also be referred to as "DivX audio version 4.0x"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is clear and apparently there should be no problem after installing the right codec. Unfortunately not so. Before installing the codec there is no sound. Afterwards Mediaplayer starts playing, but it stops at 00:00 secs (while it still indicates "Playing") and stays there.
Any idea what could be wrong?

Windows 2000. I was able to play them (well, at least one) on Win98, but I don't have that anymore. Is there no way to make it work on 2000\xp as well?

Just created a test file using DivX audio (aka WMA V2) and it plays back fine on my win2k machine using media player classic, also renders fine in graphedit.

MP Classic stays at 00:00, just like Mediaplayer, with the right codec installed. I don't understand this, because GSpot reports that rendering was successful.

which media player classic?try some old ones...the newer seems to be fussier ...u can try other apps like the core media player or bsplayer ;)

Firstly there are 2 things you should do and things will be better for you in the long run.
1 uninstall all your codecs and clean out registry. Then install DivX 3.11a first. Secondly install DivX 5.1 (or whichever). Then install XviD if you like and some other audio/video codecs.

2 install zoom player. It is much much better than any windows media player (classic 6.4 onwards). I've never hand problems playing DivX & XviD files with zoom player. It just registers the codecs better than windows media player. You can even register codecs after easily (just remember to go into settings and select the files you want to have associated with ZP).
Since you like classic from msn, suggest you just use ZP v2.80 or 2.90. Version 3 is more flashy, but works fine too.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try that.

There is another alternative called VLC Media Player, as I found out yesterday. It uses its own built in codecs and it plays the files without a problem. In fact, some of the stuff I have downloaded uses 'exotic' codecs, but VLC is able to play the lot without having the right codec installed. That's good news for me, because I don't like having codecs installed just for 1 or 2 files.
