"No keys found for this encrypted file"

Just bought Pokemon 4Ever the movie DVD for my son. This DVD just came out a couple days ago. First thing I have to do is back it up. So I'm using SmartRipper and ripping it in "all file" mode to the hard drive. Then durng the process (~60%) I got a message that SmartRipper couldn't find a key for one of the files. It asked me if I wanted to use the last key found. I answered yes and it kept on ripping.

So what does all this mean?

Would you believe "that SmartRipper couldn't find a key for one of the files." That is the enccrytion key. Try useing DVD Decrypter instead then, it may have better luck.

If you noted that for each vob being ripped that they all have the same encryption key, then selecting "Use last key" should not be a problem.

Check the final rip on your HD by simply playing the offending VOB file with say WinDVD. If it plays back with no blocking/green areas/etc then all is okay.

I have had similar problems with a number of DVDs. I have had ones that neither Smartripper or DVD Decrypter could rip.

In the end I discovered that it was my reader that was the problem, (a Lite-on 166s with the latest firmware). I replaced it with an old Lite-on (a 165H) and didn't have any problems for ages. However, once I applied the latest firmware (which actually changes the name of the player) I had problems again. I just went back to the older firmware and that fixed it.

It seems that DVD Decrypter is dependant on knowing what reader you are using to decrypt DVDs. An excellent reason to give the guy a donation so he keeps on updating it :)

As Ad100 said also, if my LiteOn 166s has reading problems (quite rare), I just use my older but slower Toshiba 1302 and all is well.

Thanks for the input. I've played each individual VOB file with PowerDVD and they all look fine. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get those advanced settings working in Pinnacle Instant Copy.
