Guess i'd beter be polite and introduce myself....

I'm a student in conservation/restauration of visual media in Antwerp, Belgium.
The courses are mostly about vintage photographic objects, but also film, old albums etc.
I'm the first here in Antwerp who's sniffing at digital media conservation/restauration. A lot of research has already been done on this topic, mainly America and UK, but here it's fairly new.
I found this site an it looks interesting (cd-r and DVD are a very popular medium, so my interest is logical.)

my knowledge into this topic is in fact not that detailed, it's more general (storage conditions etc)

other interests: analog(ue) vintage syntesizing, and all things related manned spaceflight.

a thumbs up for the guys that keep this board running!

The last two years i've been mainly working on old (1890-1930-ish) originals: microscope-peering, tweezer-wielding, swabbing, removing fly-drops one-by-one (i kid you not!), and of course dusting off.

don't get me wrong, i'm not anti-digital, far from, but it has its own problems and longetivity-issues, contrary to popular belief... and it's just that misinformation ('cd's last 100 years!') that'll cause a lot of headaches if people digitize all their precious images, thinking they're safe for 'eternity.' Twenty years, if stored in good conditions is closer to the mark...

err... this might sound REALLY stupid, but the very few messageboards i'm registered on, are fairly low traffic, with not that much people on it, so...

my question is: this board is visited frequently, i get a lot of greets on this post, should i reply to those greets one by one, or not?
wouldn't that look silly, or is there a way to do a 'group' reply? (this seems a fairly sophisticated board-engine, so it might be)

on boards with little traffic you get used to answer to virtually every post, but... i dunno, this thread would look kinda lame, going 'welcome-thanks-hi, there-hi theretoo-welcome-thanks...' (you get my drift, i hope.
for now i feel a bit of a moron, not answering everybody...

no really need for "Thank You" after every "Welcome", just wait some days and post a "Group Thank You" (manually, there is no precast forum script);
and be sure, nobody think somebody is a moron; this will only be, if you do multiple violations against < our forum rules >

i also recognized your other posting, but i don't know a freeware program for doing that; i think a commercial software which is able to do what you need is Arrokey's CD/DVD Inspector: http://www.arrowkey.com

Everything in a thread is "group" anyway... and unlike in newsgroups (where original messages may have dropped out of retention, or just don't appear because you view unread only) - ALL the messages in a thread are available, so it rarely necessary to quote, and certainly not the TERRIBLE newsgroup practice of quoting 100 lines just to say "me too".

You'll also see various ways to enumerate a particular person in the response, most common seems to be:

@xxxxxx - yes, it worked ok

And a "group" reply is simply "Thanks all".

If you haven't discovered newsgroups, I'll bet there are at least half a dozen relevant to your area of interest.

and, yes, I'm used to newsgroups (and also hate hate hate some practices you mentioned...)

It' just that a board sometimes feels kinda more personal...
so i visit/use both!
