newbie question

Just a small question that might have been asked many times. I have a decent cd-writer would I be able to burn dvd's that have not all ready been done before? or do I have to have a dvd-writer for this. As I have Nero 5.5.9 and just curiosity getting the better off me. As I have heard that this could be done or do I have to have them is it called ripped before I can do this.

If you dont have a dvd burner you cant do 1:1 copies of dvd films.You have to convert them to svcd or vcd or even divx/xvid which does take time to encode
