Newbie here - with problem with WinXP

Hi Everyone!
:D

I have been getting this pop up every time I log on to my computer, and it is driving me mental trying to figure out what it is!

Since Saturday, I've been getting this message :-

Error. Application error, there was a problem reading the registry.

Now, I have done all sorts of things - deleted my cookies, temp files, virus scanned, and restored the settings - and nothing has worked! :(

I have no idea what the hell this could be, and I hope someone can advice me :)

Many thanks in advance, :D
Michelle.

Hi snow_fairy, nice 2 see U made it here:)

When U say U restored the settings, do U mean U did a system restore?

If U haven't tried that, then run System Restore from the start menu

Another thing 2 try is when the PC is booting, U see the POST test screen with all the details of Ur hardware, but before U get the XP loadin screen, press F8 a few times till U get a menu poppin up with a few options, try the Last Known Good Configuration, this will load the settings that were ok before the problem started

Also make sure Ur Antivirus software is up 2 date(the definitions)

Did U install, then uninstall a program that then caused this message 2 appear?

Don't worry other people will reply 2 Ur post, hopefully we will get it sorted sharpish:)

Hey Strider, or should I say Banzai? ;) :)

Ok, this afternoon I did a system restore - this pop up started on Sunday, so I restored to Saturday thinking everything would be ok, but as soon as I logged back on, it was back :(

I then did everything I could possibally think of - I ran adaware (Just incase) Ran norton (Which is up to date) Delted all cookies, temp fliles and IE history, and nowt!

I've just did what you said - restated, pressed F8, and did the last know food config....all was ok, then I got the blue screen   And it said I had to cancel the resure.......and I'm back to square one. I've not downloaded anything, so I'm totally clueless  :(

I wouldn't really care if it was nothing, but I don't know that do I?

Puters eh? Who'd have em?

App erro with XP

Hi I decided to join when I read your problem to see if I can help.
OK the error does suggest a Program is trying to use the registry but cannot find its data.
Before you start I would suggest you really consider a FULL back up (drive image program is great). This will save you tear in the future.I have a partition dedicated to backups and then burn it to DVD,just incase Anyway thats for the furture.

It may help to try and see what program is running or using the system resources ,this will give you a lead to the error. So press CTRL & ALt & DELETE key and new program will open.Hopefully you be able to see whats running,Then next stop, exit all the programs in your TAB bar one by one ,Usually a right mouse click over each icon will give the exit option ,or better still stop them running at startup.I know this is long winded but until we get a error code its the only way.

Next a stupid question are you sure nothing was either uninstalled or even installed ,or update around the time the error started...

I hope this helps.but again i cant stress enough you need to get a good back made first...

take care and good luck...

Cheers bjdolphin:)& thanks 4 the reply

Yep i thought that as well, that it might be a program that was uninstalled, i do know kazaalite was installed & the removed & im wonderin if the load at startup option was checked?

One suggestion would be 2 download jvPower tools & use the registry cleaner part 2 see if she still has any remnents of that prog or others that were left behind

snow_fairy U can get jvPowertools here www.vtoy.fi/jv16/programs/jv16pt_setup.exe

Just install it & then run the reg cleaner part, this will list any leftover reg entries, but i would be carefull with it, only remove those entries 4 progs U know U haven't got on Ur machine anymore

U could also run MSConfig, just click run & enter that, then click the startup tab, if U could post what U have listed in there & also tell us if U uninstalled any of them, don't uncheck them, just in case, also check the startup folder in the start menu\programs\startup & tell us what U have in there

Cheers:)

PS i wouldn't really recommend DriveImage as older versions don't work with XP & newer versions seem 2 be really buggy & hard 2 uninstall, as long as U dont't go deletin anythin with out further advice

Thank you bjdolphin & banzibaby so much! :D :D :D

After all of that, I have finally discovered what it was - I let a friend use my computer over the weekend (Always a bad idea!) And she downloaded something from the Big Brother website - I have deleted that, and my computer is back to normal - and no more pop ups! yay! :D  :D

Thank you both so so much again - I don't know where I would have been with out all the help I've had this evening!

Many Thanks,
Michelle  :D

Hiya Banzi! :)

It was something called Chicken Ticker - a ticker tape thing with BB headline which goes accross the bottom of Internet Explorer - It obviously wasn't working because it wasn't showing when I was using IE - but I am so so glad it is over  :)

I agree with you about BB being a bit boring lol - I hey I can think of tons of stuff to do instead of watching those boring sods! lol :p :D

Thanks again :D
