newbie and lost

hi
im new to all this burning dvd and i need to know how to convert avi so that i can play dvd on my stand alone dvd player loads of people tried to help but now im really confussed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
got all the converters and nero 6 but i mot getting anywhere fast help please
