and i wonder if anyone can help answer a few questions

i just installed an MSI DR8-A rewriter but it didn't come with a driver, so XP is using the microsoft driver. i tried the msi website but couldnt find a driver for this drive. does anyone know if i need to find a driver or carry on using the 01/07/2001 version?

i just had to return some 'mirror 4 x DVD-R' disks because the drive didn't recognise the media?!!?!?

also i'm told that if i use 321 software that i wont be able to copy my copies - is this true?

any help would be appreciated

chris

Welcome....:) I would say you should start with a little reading. If I was you I would start in Tutorials.
As far as 321 goes you can only make one copy of the original with that software and no that software will not let you copy a 321 copy in it. But when you get done with that software the dvd you burn is a dvd5 which you can burn with just about any software. But I would say your better off looking at Laz's tutorials the programs are free and then you can copy any thing you want. Try the programs and let us know how you make out. :)
Good luck.

ok folks, thanks for the feedback.

i now have dvd2one ver 1.2.3, i have dvd decrypter and smartripper2.41 and am using copy to dvd!

however, ive yet to get a successful backup. i am trying my Beatles anthology disks for test, but am getting no audio - even when i play back the files from my hard drive before compressing. the same result with both smartripper and dvd decrypter?

any clues?

Sounds like you may be forgetting to select an audio track in DVD2One.
Use the AC3 6 ch 5.1 English track.

DVD2One doesn't process the audio at all it keeps the original track, but you do need to select it.

The Beatles Anthology set has audio as WAV, AC3 5.1 and DTS. In DVD2One, if you choose anything other than the AC3 5.1 then the Video quality will be quite poor and possibly no sound as well. There is more audio than video in that Beatles set.

I just had to post here. I'm not being funny but you do have your speakers turned on. When you play the original disc there is sound. What are you using to play the vob files. Try power dvd, it is good at hdd playback of files.

One way to backup your disc is using anydvd and clonedvd together. This is as close to a 1 click operation as you'll get.

Let us know how you get on.

I suspect its trying to play the DTS track. What player are you using ? suggest either WinDVD or PowerDVD. Run the DVD off your HD (all files MUST be in a VIDEO_TS folder, double click the VIDEO_TS.IFO file to start playing) with either of the above, when it get to the menu, select either the AC3 or WAV and play. If still dont get sound, then you have a problem with your PC, its setup or speakers.

Just a thought ... are you playing the vobs by double clicking them and letting Power DVD or similar open them ?

If you are, as Chickenman says, this will often result in no sound or wrong soundtrack.
You need to use the option "Open DVD File from HD" or similar and point it to the VIDEO_TS folder or VIDEO_TS.ifo, depending on software.

Opening individual vob files bypasses the instructions regarding sound in the VIDEO_TS and Vobset.ifo files.

Hope that makes sense ;)

yup, you were right - i was using the dts option on playback!

i still struggle with disk 4 but the others seem fine - guess i picked a tricky one to start with.
