New motherboard issues

I need help from someone smarter than I.

I just purchased a new motherboard, A FIC an11 stealth, and it has new features that I'm unaware of. The first is an optional RAID support. What is RAID and what does it do???? The second is it has an ACR slot. What is it reserved for??? If someone can help me out I would realliy appreciate it!!! Thanks!!!

A raid, in short terms is a way of managing hd's usage in a way that the units will complement each other. In other words more than one hd make the job of a single unit, either by redundancy(one hd copying the other hd for data savekeeping) or by stripping (diviving the data load, for speedsake) between them.

As for ACR, where is this slot located? could this be a CNR slot?

An simple way of looking at RAID is...RAID=performance. A RAID array (2 or more hard drives) will give you a performance boost. However, you should use 2 identical drives in the ATA 66/100/133 IDE range for best performance. Your Mobo's manual should give you the lowdown.

The ACR slot looks like a PCI slot but its powder blue, right?! If it's dark brown and a little smaller than PCI, its an CNR.
Essentially is a card slot standard for cheap LAN, modem, soundcard, or other devices. It's competitive to the (Intel) CNR slot, but allows moderate hardware acceleration (more than CNR). But like the more common CNR, it's hard to find devices for.

Thanks alot!!

The ACR slot looks like the PCI slots, is located just under the AGP slot, and is backwards. The Motherboard manual doesn't give any discriptions. I'm just supposed to Know. LOL Again Thanks ALOT!!!

No problem!

And yes it is backwards to prevent nooby's from putting a PCI card in it by mistake.
