New computer system

I think its time to upgrade computer system and start something new.

Now I'm working part time and getting a low wage so I'll want to save as much as I can and still get together a good computer.

You guys (in uk) can help, bit by bit I'll be buying parts of computer (a bit every 2 weeks) and building it up bit by bit, the only thing I don't really need is software ;)

So... where can I get a cheap case (with power supply) on the net/shops in Glasgow area? I think the more people the better as I'll find more bargains.

Any idea where I'll get a cheap case then?

the only thing i can suggest chris is to leave the bits that get updated quickly, till last.like a cpu.you buy one this week and in 2 weeks time theres a faster one out.hard drives you buy a quiet one this week and theres an even quieter one out the week after.do you follow me.? anyway chris good luck on youre computer build.

I know what you mean, I'll be starting a new computer system from scratch is what I meant however a 2gig processor and a 80GB hard drive with a standard cdrom is fine if you catch my drift, its just prices I'm looking for.

Chris,

I have a spare Mid Tower case which is very new (less than 10 months). The only thing is it has no power supply and missing 2 cd rom blanks (Which I am sure you will fill if you are building a new system). It has (2) Adda case fans (Very Quiet). I will let it go for $25.00US plus the cost of shipping. I have the original box and packing. If you are interested, leave me an e mail.

Cheers,

ChRiS, you said you wanted a cheap case (with power supply). That would pretty much mean its a cheap power supply also. You would be surprised of the number of strange, hard to diagnose problems that some people have that end up being traced to a cheap power supply. If you put together a fast system, with a higher end video card, that can be stressing on a power supply, and even if its listed as meeting the watts requirements that you'd think you would need, it may not be clean, steady power. Get a good power supply (if you can afford it), and avoid lots of potential problems.

Get a copy of micromart or check their website out....co.uk. I bought my components from dabs.com and simply.co.uk

Chris

Here are a list of UK online retailers other than already mentioned that I use to purchase PC components......

_http://www.aria.co.uk/
_http://catalog.cclcomputers.co.uk/acatalog/
_http://www.ebuyer.com/
_http://www.komplett.co.uk/
_http://www.microdirect.co.uk/
_http://www.novatech.co.uk/
_http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/

And a couple of UK price comparison search engines if you know what you are looking for......

IMHO you'd be better off buying online than at computer fairs as fair prices are not necessarily cheaper than online and also in my experience should you require any warranty repairs/replacements, some of these fair dealers can be difficult to track and can be inefficient in dealing with your issue whereas the online retailers tend to have established procedures for this and very fast turnarounds. For me the peace of mind far outweighs the small cost of returning an item to an online retailer.

I've seen mid tower cases for as little as £15 inc VAT on ebuyer, but recommend that you really research this as a case and PSU are often overlooked but very important considerations when building your PC. Don't just get the cheapest as you only get what you pay for.........anyway enough rambling!!!

I hope this helps and good luck with you PC build:)

If you wind up purchasing a Socket A or Socket 370 mobo, I highly suggest getting a Swiftech 370 HSF. It sounds like a miniature helicopter, but this puppy is awesome! It took me about 2 minutes to put it and it is almost impossible to crush the CPU core because of the springloaded clips.

Cheers guys, im trying to go for a Socket A - Athlon XP chip, i'll check these sites out,

cheers again :D

Chris,

If you are going to go for an Athlon chip, it may be wise to hang on for an Nforce 2 mobo. I understand that these are imminent so should be in the shops soon. Again IMHO I would avoid a via chipset as while these are not necessarily unstable, you can occasionally come across strange conflicts with other hardware.

Chris if you know what kind of memory you want then I would suggest you get it now. Memory prices have been rising the last two weeks and won't get any better untill at least after Christmas.

As far as computer system components are concerned, memory is the weirdest one as far as pricing. It can rise not only in small percentage but can triple or more in a very short time. In the Summer of 1999, memory prices were fairly stable and started to go up in early September from week to week to peak in December. It then started going back down gradually and became quite low in the summer of 2000 to less than 20% of what it was in December of 1999...
