Networking help

Hi

I have a couple of PC"s (Both Running Win 98 SE) ans a couple of 10/100 network cards and I want to network the PC's so that I can share a laser printer,HDD's & internet conection!

Can anyone tell me how to set it up or point me in the direction of a site with a guide to walk me through?

Thank's in advance,
Mosher:confused:

Nice site - good iluustration of X-over cable for anyone who makes their own.

98SE is a little different to XP - but that site isn't relying on the Wizard, so most of the things are there, but in slightly different places.

One "GOTCHA" (well, it got me!)
If a machine is not sharing anything, it does not show up in network neighbourhood.

2nd Gotcha -
If you have a modem as well, ensure that the Windows sharing is NOT bound to TCP on the outgoing adapter - otherwise it may be probed and attacked. I prefer to do Windows file/print sharing and client by NetBEUI - a simpler protocol which cannot be routed, as having any of those client/sharing features bound to ANY TCP/IP (even on an entirely inbound adapter) tends to open the NETBIOS port (UDP 139) - not a huge risk in itself, but a probe target unless suppressed by a suitable firewall.

hey Mosher,

I would be more than happy to help, but I have a couple questions first.

1. Are you using Cablemodem or DSL. If so who is the provider?

2. how close are the 2 machines?

3. Do you have any budget constraints?

Post back or PM me. :)
