Network Help needed

Tried to network 2 puters using a crossover cable, one running xp the other running windows 98se,the puter running windows 98 can't see the other puter at all, and the puter running xp sees the the one running 98 but cant access any files.

Although The computer on XP sees my other computer if I click on the icon
I get messages like network path not found and server cannot be found.
Thought this was going to be easy as I used the floppy disk made by the network wizard but I've been at it for hours now, I'm tearing my hair out,
please help :(

With win 98 machine log in with same user and pass as win xp machine ... disable internal firewall on XP ... reboot both machines ... enable sharing on each PC ... even just create new folders ..right click them and go sharing... best of luck !!

shows how much I know, when networking 2 pc's I expected to be able to
file share straight off
So How do I go about logging in to both pc's.
