nero vision express

i have just purchased a dvd recorder from verbritrium. i have the nero vision express with the dvd plug in, when i add a file that is .avi or .mpeg the program seems to freeze halfway of the "adding video files to project" stage, also i have the nero enterprise edition with the mpeg2 plug in , every time i want to create a vcd or svcd or dvd it says that it only recognizes .vob or .ifo files, i don't know what type of files those are, can someone help me i am eager to create my first dvd video.
thanks in advance

VOB = MPEG-2 program streams with additional info
IFO = DVD Info File
The VOB file contains the video stream and the IFO file contains various scene and timing information.

Try to convert the avi file to mpeg1 for VCD and mpeg2 for SVCD or DVD with Tmpeg and use Nero only to burn. In case you want to greate a DVD, you have to greate the VOB and IFO files with an authoring software like Maestro or Dazzle DVD Complete or sonic DVDit or.....

Have a read in the Tutorial section, lots of good information there to help you get started.

As Denexo said, leave Nero for burning, not for encoding which sucks big time.

Thank you Denexo and ChickenMan first for responding to my question and secondly for your advice. I will check the Tutorial out as well as try to obtain Maestro or dazzle DVD Complete.
